• I thought it was a clever strategy to show us different ways of displaying/recording by giving us the exercise with "hands". Surely has shown that video and photos aren't the only thing we can use and, when you see fit, there's no need for a table;
• Some of my colleagues said my collection was too broad, that there seemed to lack a criteria on my choice for the textures, it seemed random and they said we it not for my notes they wouldn't have understood my collection. Actually, my collection was about different textures, so I was aiming for that diversion. I agree I could've chosen a more specific type of texture, but then I would need to change the focus of my collection and I wouldn't have what I wanted

I thought we had to use all the materials and techniques presented to us... turns out I could've used way more and how I wanted... I chose to use the mechanic pencil to draw the scene in front of me, but in the middle of the process I changed my lines. At the beginning they were full of curves and gentle, but then they became straight and harsh, though I enjoyed this second method much more than the first one. It felt less analytical and more fluid and free. Since the beginning I wanted to use different materials to make some elements more detailed than the others, so I chose the vegetal charcoal for the nature textures, the China ink for the keys and watercolor for the tissues. The charcoal is not a material that I like to use, mostly because I don't seem to have control over it when I make a mistake, but at the end I managed to get something similar to what I had planned. The China ink is a material that I have no problem with, as long as I have the right brush, which happened to be the case. Of all the drawings I did today, this one was the one I enjoyed the most, not only because of the final result, but also because I enjoy "playing" with the China ink. Feels natural. With a medium brush I did a light grey base in which later I used a finger nail precision brush to focus on the keys and key chain's details. I didn't manage the tissues' water color drawing, because I didn't find the colors I needed, and this one I wanted to be as true to the original as possible. I'll try them at home, since there I know I have these colors. Despite of that, I managed what I wanted, though not how I wanted. Next time, I'll make sure I worked on the shadings... Solange told me to face my difficulties and try to draw in a giant scale. I did try... but while one thing was giant, the other one returned to its normal size (unwillingly). Guess I have a lot of work to do on the scale matter.

1. I decided to separate the textures I had with the theme "natural vs. man made". I had leaves and I had keys, tissues and paper, so I thought that if it was well displayed it would look pleasing to the eye. Turns out I was wrong... it didn't look good and it didn't seem to have been a good idea because they were displayed on a chair (which wasn't photogenic at all). On the ground it would've looked better (I think).

2. I chose to organise the tissues based on their size on the ground, so the biggest would be the in the bottom and the smallest would be on top. I made that choice based on one of the artists we saw today. It also didn't look good on the ground. One of the shirts was nearly completely covered by the bag I placed on top... And also, it didn't give the idea my collection was about textures, so I gave up on that idea...

3. Still thinking about the previous idea, I decided to focus on one type of texture (tissues) and hang my collection. This one worked!! Yes! Since it was hanging in the middle of the passage, people had to touch it to pass (goal achieved!). And it looked way more interesting than when they were on the ground.

4. When we were downstairs, I decided to both focus only on the tissues and to place them on a place where people would have to move the clothes if they wanted to sit. That's why I placed them on the bench. It looked good, but I don't know if it worked. I guess if it was left longer I could have achieved my goal.

5. I chose to work with my commerades. I had this idea because I wanted the tissues to be manipulated, and what better way to represent it if not by asking people to have them? I was a fun experience, to see my friends playing with the tissues as they wanted. Goal achieved once more.

The monoprint technique showed itself incredibly useful for my collection, because with this type of print I managed to represent different textures. I don't know if the dry point technique was that good for me because I didn't see that much of a variety... takes too long for it to be ready and the result doesn't look like what I want to show. All I could do with this technique was an impression of my key chain...
But! When it came to the monoprint I could knead the paper, I could use this paper to print another texture, I could use my finger, my clothes... personally, I think things are going way too fast and it's too much information for such a small amount of time... I forgot many of the things we were taught until today...

I had several doubts about how to display my collection. At the beginning, I thought we had to show everything we had, but then I heard it was actually our choice. I chose to only show the outcomes with the techniques we learned the previous day and display them as if they were playing cards, since you always touch playing cards. Turns out Ana didn't quite like it and suggested me I changed the display, while Monique was telling me to try frotagge. Frotagge is a technique which you place a sheet of paper on top of something (somewhere) and use a soft pencil to print that texture. Once I got the hang of if, I started to appreciate the technique, and the results were pleasing to my eye. Both Ana and Monique liked it too. The only problem was when we had to show it to the others... my feedbacks said that the art work was nice but they wouldn't have known it was about textures if I didn't tell them. As a result, they suggested I presented the prints with the objects near them, something that Ana told me she wouldn't do... That made so confused... People say we should do according to our hearts, but when that happens other people say something completely different... no wonder I can't really have fun when making a project: when I do it my way, people say "do it differently", and when I do it differently they say "do as your heart says"... at the end, what happens is the project didn't go as I wanted and I didn't have fun in the project...

We were asked to write our names with any materials we could find in the studio. One thing in particular is that I used some purple little balls tied to a black thread to make the "n", though initially I thought of using it for the "i". Turns out that I had no idea how to make the "n" in way of which I wouldn't have to use pencils, but nobody said I had to stick to straight line letters, so I played with this a bit. The result was incredibly close to what I wanted and it looks pretty close to my own handwritten "n". We also were asked to find letters out in the street during lunch time. I personally had some difficulties to find an "r" and a "y". Once back at the studio, we had to upload the photos to our padlet and tell the teacher which one we thought was the most successful and which one was the least successful. It was on this day that we received the letters we would work with. My letter is "h".

Today we had to print our letters (one of our five variations for both upper and lowercase) with two different techniques. I have enjoyed both very much. The one with the canvas was harder than it looked... I'm just glad I got the hang of it. And the one with the roll and ink was ok. Nothing different from what I already knew. We had to change our stencil for the print room, because they were supposed to be in a different paper, but it was ok. I was a bit unhappy with my stencil and glad that we needed to make another one, because then I could develop a new variation of my letter. It wasn't the way I wanted, but it was great anyway. Minimalist, but looked much better than I imagined. I did the letter this way because I didn't have enough time to develop nor try my original idea, but the printed part looked exactly as I wanted. Initially I wanted (again) something related to the Maori culture, so I thought "why not?", but since I didn't have enough time I changed the original design to something simpler. As for the other printing technique, my stencil was done and so all I had to do was start working. I didn't appreciate some of the outcomes, but they were fine. I don't know what nor how to create different outcomes, so I ended up with the same idea in different colours... I wouldn't know what to do with them even if I had all the time in the world... basically, what I did was just have fun painting... I dont know if that was supposed to happen, but it did...

(Experimenting different materials to create different fonts is already a boring activity.) I had some help to think about what would go well with nature, with a closer look at the trees. Leo suggested I tried something with the axe or the saw, but I didn't like the result. Later, I tried to create a font with a stick, a leaf and a flower. The flower was the one I liked the most (out of these), but the one I truly appreciated was the one with bamboo pen and India Ink, for o could draw the letters as if they were made of a bunch of branches tied together. I didn't like it alone on the paper. It would have made more sense if I had the image with it. And I think these projects are demanding too much of us in a too short amount of time. As a result, we don't have time to develop our ideas properly and our outcomes are far from what we are planning. This is stressful and we have to content ourselves with simple, small and awful solutions. And this part-by-part process is way too slow. We need less trying and testing and more doing if we want to achieve our goals with good quality.

I have the deep and strong feeling that my entire morning was a waste of time. Discussing why and how we took those 60 photos was definitely something that's not supposed to take the whole morning, but it did. And we barely had any time left to discuss the other 25 images, thank goodness, because more time would've been wasted. More time that we could be using to be productive. All the lectures are taking too long. We're loosing interest on them before they even get to the middle of it and we lose the artists' names because the slides are passed too fast. The only moment of the day I have nothing to complain about is the testing of the filters. That part went well, but if I could skip the beggining of the day, I gladly would.

A whole day building stuff. Sounds good, easy and pleasing IF... I could think properly. Leopoldo told me about the "make and record" strategy (literally, you first build and then you record what you built). It was helpful for someone who couldn't think of anything. I arrived today with one idea already built, but I was told to refine/develop it. I don't know how many results were required, but I managed to have some. (This reflective journal in particular is not so good because I'm facing some difficulties that may be interesting to talk to Michael about.) This picture is one of my filter outcomes and though it is a solution, it's not exactly what I wanted. If I had more time I would develop it better

We had to being 25 old photos in photographic paper. I had to go to the workshop, so a great deal of the morning I was working on something else than with the pictures. The workshop was incredibly interesting. It taught me about the different ways to research, the strategies we could use to find the main ideas on the project brief (such as circling or using a *) and how to use them later to our advantage in the creative process. The workshop certainly was one of them best things that happened today, because we were said that the reflective journal and the research file are as important as the outcomes and the sketchbook, so learning how to do these files properly helps us think more focus and be clearer about what we mean. Once I left the morning workshop, I went back to the 25 old photos activity, of which the first one was to add something to the photo. I reminded me of a similar activity I had to do on a notebook cover during my high school: get inspiration from an artist that took pictures with his drawings "interfering" on the original image. I chose a photo with a swimming pool and an umbrella and I decided to add a drawing of Curious George. I thought that this character's happy face would fit perfectly on the image, but it wasn't happening. I couldn't figure out a way to add George to that image, so I decided to give it some time and move on to the next image, in which we had to subtract something. I chose a picure with a band on it, but I had no idea of what to remove, until a friend told me to remove the man standing in the middle of the picture. I didn't appreciate that idea, so I thought of removing all the drums and speakers I could find, though I have no idea why I did it... Then we had the binding photos activity. I chose to use two pictures for this because they had my mother on them, but she doesn't like them for "she looks ugly on them". I also wanted to work with them because I thought that maybe with a little difference they would look better in my mom's eyes. It was something similar to a restoration work. I wanted to see them together, but I didn't know how. In sewing, there are several different patterns, and I didn't know which one to use, until I decided for a simple one: on the front, they looked like horizontal lines, while on the back they looked like diagonal lines. I thought of covering the whole side of the photos but I found it more pleasing to the eye to join only the tips with the thin golden thread I chose. The last type of intervention on the photos were by "punching" them (making wholes). I picked another show photo and this time I had a clear idea of what I wanted, which was make small wholes on the sky portion of the photo to give the impression of stars. It worked as I expected, though I could have more variety on the size of the wholes. After this, I returned to the workshop, this time to focus on the reflective journal strategies. Turns out that the key factor for a clear and successful reflection is to make questions. Lots of questions: why, how, why not... another strategy was to "interview yourself", because journalists are curious and they ask a bunch of questions, which is what we need to do. We were also said that we don't have to answer all the questions given to us on the reflective journal, or else we'd spend hours doing it. Though is always good to read again what we wrote, not only to add information, but also to see if it clearly says what you want to say.
I only returned to Curious George at home later, and I changed the photo. It was an overexposed photo, so I couldn't really see what it was answer but. All it could distinguish in that picture were plants that, I believe, hanged from the ceiling. That was perfect, because then I could easily add Curious George attached to one of the plants, making it look like this little monkey was playing with the vines.

We spent the morning watching some talks with artists about their ideas to divulge art in different ways. I believe I wasn't thinking and taking notes as an artist. I involutarily took notes as a company owner, since most of what they were saying had a relation with company management, which happens to be an area I have some constant contact with, thanks to my father's job. This was useful, though. Many artists (as they put it today) have no idea how hard it is to have a young gallery and to keep an online platform that can only divulge itself using ads in social networks. It was interesting to watch these talks because they brought to our consciousness the costs and risks our fellow artists have to face. Specially when it comes to the way we exhibit our works. One of the galleries was born out of a frustration with how the artists were forced to show their art. She believes that artists are now forced (thanks to the big galleries and corporations) to display only what can be sold. She also believes that if things continue the way they are, art may lose all its intellectual value. As for the approach between art and Internet, their idea was interesting because they wanted to take the art to those who had no access to it. It was interesting also because at the beggining they thought there would be some resistence from the artists to expose their work online, but the ones they invited were so keen on the idea that the organisers were surprised with the results they got. This also happened to have been good for the curators, as we were told they wanted diversity.

The day begun with a "30 ideas in 30 minutes" exercise. They really gave us 1 minute to generate 1 idea. I never thought it possible to have 30 ideas in 30 minutes, and turns out it was more useful than I expected. I arrived at ebac today with a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but the exercise gave me another idea that I will work on. The first idea I had was to make a zine linked to my personal project, of which the main objective is to show the world the beautiful creatures, languages and peoples we have brought to extinction and many others that are endangered. My friends saw this and they told me it would be a good idea if I did develop it but they also suggested I picked another theme that has a deep connection with me, so I chose "different teaching methods". I chose this one because I studied in a Montessori school and what we do everyday in ebac strongly reminds me of the Montessori method. Since not everybody knows about this different teaching method, I thought about presenting the method and comparing it to our everyday life at ebac. As a result, I will develop both simultaneously.

I had a Photoshop workshop this morning. Though useful and interesting, I thought it was too much information for the amount of time we had. I got lost a few times, because I tried to do with Alex and while he was explaining, so at a moment I decided to just write the steps, so i could do it on my own later. A shame I only had this idea after the first topic had already been talked about. "Experience is the best teacher", they say, so I already know what to do the next time we have this kind of workshop. As for the afternoon, I presented my ideas to the class. I thought about developing two ideas simultaneously: one that would be similar to an ad of my upcoming game/film/book1 and the other would be to compare the daily routine in EBAC with the daily routine of a Montessori class2.
1 - my upcoming book/game/film (personal project) has as it's main objective warn the world about endangered animal species, languages and peoples and show the ones we have already brought to extinction. (Pretty much make us feel guilty for our actions.) I was thinking about using the Self-publish to divulge my personal project.
2 - I thought of making this comparison because I see endless similarities, though there is a difference: the UK method works for everyone at any age while Maria Montessori (creator of the Montessori method) focused her strategies to children only. My idea was to introduce this Italian method to those who don't know about it. Cezar asked me why I'd want to compare similar things, I explained him the difference and he suggested me to search for teaching methods in the UK and to compare Montessori with British with a traditional Fine Arts university.
I will carefully analyse both options, but I think Cezar deserves a better explanation of the first idea (I didn't know how to explain it when he asked so I owe him some more words).

My morning began with a screenprint workshop. To me it was more a reminder than anything else. I do understand this is to show us the many possibilities we have, aside from drawing, painting and video, but at least allow those who aren't using these techniques in their ideas to go and use this time to work. I felt as if I wasted time... though I know I haven't. In the afternoon we had a group critique of our initial ideas. I had to explain what the theme of my project was and then I'd receive some feedback. I was a bit disappointed I got the feedback only from Cezar and Daniel, but I was glad to hear that I could develop both ideas simultaneously (I thought I had to pick one and work only with that one). We also have received a sheet of paper with a schedule of the week. The teachers asked us to plan our days until next week's Thursday. I planned mine in away which would allow me to work on both ideas in a relatively similar time. We were also inteoduced to some upcoming workshops (hand printing, binding and folding and Adobe support). I'm glad we could sign up for more than one, or else I'd have a hard time choosing between Adobe and binding. Both are useful for me in this project because one is a zine (binding and folding) with shocking information about the animals we brought to extinction and how and the other one is a video comparing traditional Brazilian teaching methods with the British methods and the Montessori method. But since I can go for both I'm less worried.

The day began with Ana's lecture about her work. I chose not to take notes about it because I have already seen it last year and because I wanted to work as much as I could on my project, which I knew would take a lot of time. I also have decided to develop only 1 of my ideas, because then I could give it my full time and attention. I thought this was the best to be done, since now I can focus completely on 1 idea only. Once Ana's lecture was over, I had to use padlet to inform Michael where I'd be. I chose to go to the open area outside the library, because I just couldn't stand the air conditioning temperature anymore. Once there, I started to search for the information about the characters I chose to put in the zine. The same happened at the beggining of the afternoon. Once I thought I had collected some interesting data about one of the character's species, I started to write down how the said character would look like, from hair length to the type of the tattoo it would have, age, height, weight, etc. When I was satisfied with what I had, I started to draw a portrait of this character. I plan to use the characters to explain a bit about their species and use the main character as a guide of which will be with the reader and will be asking the other characters about their kind.

The ones that were "extinct", "extinct in the wild", "critically endangered" or "endangered" would be in the zine. Above these, I wouldn't work with this time. I took this decision because I realised not all the character's species were in the brink of extinction, so I thought it better to focus on those that really needed some special attention. Once I finished choosing that, I started to search about the species so I could have some information to add to the zine. I also thought it would be better to have the main character presenting all the information instead of asking the other characters about their kind and to use a portrait of these characters to show how their species look like.

I spent the whole day searching about the species I chose to present in the zine. But I also thought it would be better if I chose only 1 of each group to show, then I would decide between the sage or the guardian, depending on the specie's conservation status. I chose to show only 1 of each group because I thought it's not necessary to raise awareness about a group with more than 1 animal. 1 representative of the group is enough, since all that I need is to make people curious about the animals. If they're curious enough, they'll search for more information and will know what's going on. Besides, when searching for one, you'll end up finding other animals, since many are relatives to each other, no matter if the specie in the spotlight is extinct or not. I have also decided the kind of information I will offer the public: the specie's name, when it was discovered, when it was extinct and the cause of the extinction (for those that are extinct). For those that are still existing, the idea is similar: the specie's name, when it was discovered and the threats it faces currently. This should work, since the main idea with this personal project is to raise awareness of what we lost and are about to lose if we are not careful.

I had a folding and binding workshop with Monique this morning, which was more than useful because my publication is a zine, so I had plenty of new ways to make that zine. One of them was folding the paper in four vertical columns, unfold and fold once in half horizontally. From this point we could choose between cutting the 2 "squares" in the middle or cut three of the "squares". Then we needed to figure out a way to fold it to make it look like a small book1. We could also use the Japanese sewing technique for a bigger amount of pages (which is not the case, because we have an 8 pages limit)2. Monique said she would teach us these techniques so that we could use them anytime we wanted, because then we would already know how to do them. On the afternoon I had a strong headache so I went home earlier, but I still managed to build a larger version of technique 1 and in green paper. The final size was perfect, somewhere close to A5.

I had scanned one of my character's drawing so that I could work on this point, but I wasn't able to do this because I have a lot of difficulties using MacBook, so before lunch I had Sol by my side helping me to do my stuff. Thought helpful, after lunch I tried to repeat the process on my own, I had friends reeling me how to do things, but they have their own ideas to worry about and I felt like I was loosing my time trying to learn how to use a Mac (at the wrong moment). So I returned to the studio to continue what I had started at the Mac lab: type the information I chose to add in the zine. At home I would finish the characters' design, make a xerox copy of them, print the typed info and test the possibilities for a collage.

We were given a small activity that would help us have an idea of how the assessment is going to work. It was good because we had the opportunity to know the criteria used in the assessment, but personally I thought it wasn't a good idea because now I'm freaking out what I didn't in 19 years of life. The things I saw were a constant reminder that I had a huge amount of stuff to do if I want to escape the referal grade. We had some time to finish our project and this was good for me and other people who needed to work a bit more on our stuff. In the afternoon, we had a lecture about fair use and copyright. Something that we should have had at the beginning of the course, before we started to work and develop our ideas, not now (3 days before presenting it to the public). And also, many times the teachers told us different things about the same topic. That is confusing and not helpful. Anyway, I have changed my mind again and I want the final result to be in black and white, no longer indifferent colors; the main character will not be in the zine, presenting the information as I wanted initially; I will change the zine's design because I need 1 more page to write the bibliography and my name. The model I was using before had 8 pages, but no space for the bibliography, which happens to be pretty important. We also were shown a little table, filled with empty boxes for us to fill according to the risks we are taking and what we can do about them, so they're not "harmful" to us. This is great, because not everyone knows how they're doing and how much our works cost. Though, again, we should know this from the beginning of the project, not now

To print those sheets was the problem, because people printed it the wrong size and would take other's sheets, the website wasn't simple to use... it was a mess. By the afternoon we had to start thinking about the 3D letter we'd have to build on the next day. This was a good activity, since I felt I was doing something, not just blindly obeying to instructions. Of all the ideas I had, I decided to make my letter out of plastic bottles and a bit of hot glue, so that I would have the 3D structure I need and I'd use the hot glue to draw the letter I designed on the bottle

I went to Papelaria Universitária to buy some wire and thread. Afterwards, build. Since I had to change my idea, the new one was: keep the plastic bottles as a base and work the wire until it looked like my own created "H", tie the threads around the shaped wire (so it would be more visible through the bottle) and use more wires to keep the shaped ones in place. It worked well for my normal standards of "good ideas in short time". Not exactly what I had in mind but still a solution. (The only trouble I faced in this idea was the pain on the tip of my fingers - worked too long with the wires.)

When we had to display our outcomes, I realised that I would either have to stick them on the wall or place them on a surface which people could see it. I transfered them to the wall, but I didn't have a table to place the 3D letter, so I stick it to the wall too, but I passed from "like", to "don't like it so much", to "don't like it at all". The worst part of this crit is that it was a group crit, so everybody saw my "work" (in the lack of a better word to describe the outcomes, I'll use "work"). Though Daniel said I at least had something to show, I wanted to make it clear that this outcome was not what I wanted and that I wasn't so successful in this I because I had a tough week (which is true, since I was having some issues at home that were directly affecting me and my creative process).

I had so little that a table or any other place to keep my outcomes at the height of the eye was not necessary, so I left them on top of some pieces of wood on the floor. People were going to see someone's work on the table, but then they realised they nearly stepped on my work so then they stop and see it. The thing is that I had only 1 feedback, aside from that of my partner in this crit session, and at the end my works were all covered in dust. I liked this different crit because I believe when we have a one-to-one we are more focused on what we did and we have more time to discuss what we think about our comrades' work (aside from getting and giving a much more focused feedback on our works).

Believing is seeing - day 4

Crit day, but for some reason we had a lecture about was to turn 2D images into 3D objects. One of the artists presented used origami to make his art 3D and since I have ability with origami I thought to use this technique to make my images become 3D objects. What I chose to do was fold an image I had of sweets into a table. When the first one was ready and I showed it to Daniel and Monique they liked the result but told me to do more and bigger. There I was again: that chaos to print stuff at EBAC. I hate when I have to do it. Never get it right. I was lucky Isabela was there to help because I find this process so difficult and so unpractical that I feel discouraged to do it at EBAC. Anyway, printed and folded. Many. In different sizes. But again we had a group crit, and that takes too long. At the end, people had to hurry to show their work and still we had taken quite some time from the life drawing session, that surely was bad for the session

We had the entire day time to give the final touches to our works. This was amazing because I could finish the zine, make some ajustements in the Photoshop... it was wonderful to work like that. At the beginning of the morning Malu and other staff members went to the studio to talk about how to prepare the studio and to guide the public to the fair. They said we needed posters to inform of the fair and that we should make them. If this was either in the project brief or showed to us at the beginning of the week, ok no problem we can do it, but no. This was told the day before the fair. We're freaking out with the project, hurrying to finish it and now we still have to plan how to decorate the studio and create posters to guide the visitors? Oh man... I also thought it better to have more than 8 pages (9, in my case - counting cover and back cover) because I had to explain what the zine is about, and I didn't do it on any other pages because I was presenting the characters' information.

We cleaned the 3rd floor studio to create a proper space for our fair in the afternoon. That done (and after lunch), we had a one to one critique and I teamed up with Gaia. She said she liked the fact that I have done all the research I showed her, because most of the time we're too focused on what is visually pleasing and we forget that we need to do some research to get to the "visually pleasing". Gaia also suggested I study the materials first, so that it will help me when I have to scan something - it'll give me a better idea of the result I'll get. I'm glad she liked my amount of research, since they weren't just for the Self-publish project; they were both for knowledge of the current situation certain animals are and for fun. Also, without those pieces of information, I wouldn't have managed to create the zine, so they were basic (somehow). I agree with Gaia about the materials because in the original drawings I added some half-tones that now that's printed is barely visible... still, I don't think it's going to ruin the rest of my day.
