Songs were short or fast paced, with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, simple instrumentation, and mostly political, anti establishment lyrics.

In the late 1970s, a new style of the genre called 'Hardcore punk' began. Songs were louder, faster and more political than normal punk.

During the 1990s, punk went on to becoming more pop styled with the genre 'pop punk'. Songs were nicer and lighter compared to the angry style of normal and hardcore punk.
