This sentence refers to the narrator's description of the store owner who is "almost deaf" and speaks very loudly to everyone. The customers need to speak loudly too, so that the store owner can hear them. On the page the father got home the text says "Several weeks later, for no apparent reason, my father was released from prison. The moment he came through our door was one of overwhelming relief and joy.". For example, during the end of the read aloud of the book "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds, he said, "Although I don't know much about them, I do know they are pretty, and girls like them, and I know that it is made up of two good words, and that man ain't got two good words in him. or anything that any girl would like, because girls dont like a man who would try to shoot them and their son, and that's the man he was." This excerpt from the read aloud showed us that Jason Reynolds was abused by his father as a child and he taught this to us through by contrasting a sunflower to his father. This was done through a sort of simple yet somewhat strange, and funny type of wordplay up to the point where it said "a man who would try to shoot them and their son, and that's the man he was."
