The Panama Canal is a manmade body of water that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the narrown country of Panama. The canal is about 50 miles long and was completed in 1914. Originally the French hoped to complete a canal in Panama but had to abandon the project because their workers kept getting sick from yellow fever, malaria, and other tropical diseases, which killed thousands of workers. Later on the Americans would pick up where the French left off and eventually complete the project. https://youtu.be/q2T7CL9wqyM

Comment below whether you believe this is an example of adaptation, dependency, or modification and why...

On September 2nd, 1666, a small fire started in a bakery near London Bridge when a baker failed to properly extinguish his oven. It was considered a very small fire at first, but the land was very dry due to no rain, and the wooden houses went up in flames very quickly. Firefighters tried to explode the wooden houses in the way, making a fire break to stop the flames, but that only succeeded in making things worse. By the end of the destruction 4 days later on September 6th, only one fifth of London was left standing.

They are amazing on the moisture and cool temperatures in the mountains of Lebanon that make this ecosystem unusual in the Middle East. But now, after centuries of human threats to the cedars of Lebanon, the trees face their most dangerous threat, Climate Change, it could wipe out most of the country’s remaining cedar forests by the end of the century. The trees germinate in late winter because they need a freeze, preferably with snow.

March 12, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake struck Fukushima. The resulting earthquake caused a massive tsunami to flood the land, causing a nearby power plant to detonate. The power plant's backup generators were damaged due to the flooding, and to make matters worse, the power loss because of the tsunami caused the cooling systems of the reactors to fail. The rising heat of the reactors caused an increase of pressurized hydrogen gas to build up inside the reactor rooms. Radioactive material started to leak out of the facility. A series of self combustions started in the reactor rooms. This was considered one of the worst nuclear incidents since Chernobyl. The tsunami took the lives of about 18,000 people, and about 5 million tons of debris became scattered around the Pacific ocean. People soon began to rebuild once the radiation levels soon dropped to safe levels. In response to this disaster, over 12 billion dollars were spent on a 245 mile sea wall to defend against future tsunamis. However, due to the 41 feet tall wall surrounding the whole area, many people felt trapped. It was as if they were in a jail, for the innocent. Many people no longer walk the beaches, and many of the inhabitants see the wall as an eyesore.

But the resource that we need today has been shrinking and shrinking due to deforestation. There is deforestation by fire in the Amazon to make more room for farmland, which takes away wildlife's population and habitats. Roads and airports were washed out, neighborhoods were smashed and flooded, and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. Hurricane Dorian left the Bahamas with no fresh water, food or shelter. Luckily, in March they managed to build a reverse-osmosis water treatment plant that could produce over 7,500 gallons of clean water in a day.

Cyanide fishing is where fishers squirt concentrated sodium cyanide(Sodium cyanide is a highly toxic chemical compound that many fish collectors in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia) onto reefs to stun the fish and scoop them up for aquarium trade or the live food fish market. But, it often kills the fish and other reef organisms. Brian Tissot says “There isn't a scientist that would support cyanide fishing.”

Until recently, researchers needed sizable tissue samples to detect cyanide exposure, which meant killing the fish being tested. But in 2012, a new method that measures thiocyanate—a byproduct of cyanide detoxification that fish excrete in their urine—was developed.

Working with this new method, they bought fish that recently arrived in shipments to the store, to minimize the amount of time since possible cyanide exposure. Each fish was then placed in manufactured seawater, where it was allowed to swim and pee for 24 hours. Water samples were then collected and sent to an independent lab for thiocyanate testing.

In the end, they found that a majority of the fish had been caught using cyanide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKUkLJ-Z_LY

Kiribati is a nation in the Pacific Ocean made up of many islands. Around 100,000 people live in Kiribati, over half of those on the biggest island, South Tarawa. In this city, there is only one road where all the commerce happens. The way the islands are now, there is a lack of fresh water and food. This is because climate change. The sea levels are rising, this shrinks the land area, increases storm damage, destroys crop land, and breaches the fresh water pools making them undrinkable. The government isn’t making any efforts to combat climate change, so the island nation will probably have to migrate in the near future.
https://vimeo.com/244728466#share

Iceland has quite a unique benefit for the people that live there. The citizens of Iceland benefit from the abundant geothermal energy that lies just beneath their feet.

Although not nearly as popular as the other clean renewable energy available to the world. Geothermal energy may be the one with the most potential. In Iceland just 15000 feet below the surface the heat and magma of the earth are used to harness wonderfully clean and reliable energy. There is also a revolutionary new project in Iceland called the Iceland Deep Drilling Project or IDDP for short. The IDDP aims to delve even further into the Earth to tap even higher temperatures than ever before, thus gaining more energy to be consumed. One source estimated that geothermal energy could provide up to 8% of the entire World’s power. The best part about it is renewable energy can be cheap and has been proven quite effective too, as Iceland is run almost entirely off of renewable energy. Iceland has a lot more to offer than beautiful scenery, they could also provide the future of Earth’s energy needs.

If you would like to learn more or better understand the piece here is an article that talks all about it: https://time.com/4844086/geothermal-energy-iceland-deep-drilling-project/

On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine suffered a major accident/explosion that released radioactive substances everywhere. The explosion happened due to a flawed reactor design and a disregard for protocol from some of the higher rankings in charge. The explosion caused many people to die due to radiation and because of all the radiation exposed all the plants and animals were affected as well. The accident is also believed to be the main reason the Soviet communism collapsed. Even though the explosion at Chernobyl was the reason for many things to fail, it also has presented some good things.

Chile is a country that has become used to earthquakes due to the fact that they are so recent. Although apps that warn about earthquakes are already on many people’s phones, the authorities feel like they should be doing more. For example, the tallest building in Chile is built using massive steel structures that twist independently of the shaking ground and create a buffer between the building and the ground. They also have massive concrete blocks that keep the building stable by swaying. When water lines burst during earthquakes, another major problem begins to unfold itself. However, a water delivery company called Tohl has been set up to provide relief to those who lose their water supply in an earthquake. The company puts a tube in a water source, then drags the tube by helicopter to the nearest community. After an earthquake, many people immediately grab their phones to check on their loved ones. However, this quickly overloads the network, which it turn prevents the government from sending out official warnings. However, a system has been designed so that alerts can be sent out to all devices no matter the server status. Chile has been experiencing earthquakes for a long time, and after each devastating earthquake the authorities have pushed more rules to the people. However, it has worked, and the death tolls are going down, and more buildings survive every earthquake.

Mexico is sinking and has been for years, at its worst 9 inches a year. The national place tilts over the sidewalk, the buildings are starting to resemble drawings with slanted windows and doors that don't fit right in the door frame. The reason of mexico's sinking if from drilling into ancient lake beds in search of water, that wehn drilled and taken away causes the water table to dip taking the ancient lake beds with it. Along with that, they are in a water crisis, causing them to import water, because they didn't make a system to recycle water waste or collect rainwater. Climate change can bring two different effects, it can bring longer, heavier more persistent rains, and it can bring longer droughts, which in turn can make it seriously difficult to bring water to all the people living in mexico city.

This area in Morocco used to be a grassy field where plants and animals would thrive, it has now been turned into a desert. The people who relied on a local truffle grown in the area are no longer able to grow the truffle and have it as a food source. The sheep that used to roam the area are no longer there because the desert can't support them. The local people also relied on the sheep for their wool and meat. All of the plants that were in the area are no longer able to grow and they have all died off.

In The Democratic Republic of the Congo, many children are being forced into work in cobalt mines. It was found that kids at as young as the age of four years old, are being forced into this labor. Even when children aren’t yet old enough to mine the cobalt, many are found handling it and still getting their young selves exposed to the toxic elements cobalt has. As young as they are, they still have the ability to identify cobalt from other minerals. The thing about mining cobalt is how much it contributes to the world’s economy. Many iPhones or other such devices use cobalt to use in their rechargeable batteries. Other uses are for magnets, corrosion resistance, Tesla car batteries, and more. More than 50% of the cobalt mined in the world comes from The Democratic Republic of the Congo, and of that, its estimated about 20% of which is mined by hand. Besides the countless health risks workers endure on a daily basis, the environment also takes a large toll from this mining that happens on a daily basis.

Using this new railroad tunnel decreases the length of the trip by 25 miles, making transportation much easier and faster. It is currently the longest tunnel in the world at around 57 km long, but despite what you would think, doesn’t take longer to use as it is a straight and flat path. The old route from Zurich to Milan used to take place on spiraling mountains, and even though it resulted in better views, it sacrificed the efficiency that the new railroad has.

This island is also where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet, making it one of the stormiest places on earth. It snows almost everyday and has endless winds. At the southernmost part of the South American continent, there are blizzards for almost ¼ of the year. As you can probably tell, it is hard living here, but people make it work. Sometimes Indians are able to drink the fresh water from the heavy rains which forms a layer above the salt ocean water. There are not many resources for people to live off of, even the early explorers were surprised humans could survive there in the harsh conditions. “They described the Indians as the most “savage” uncivilized of the entire world.”, some even classified them as apes, but they made living there work no matter the measures.

Do you think this place is an example of adaptation, modification, or dependency.

Fiji is a small island country in the pacific ocean that is well known for its tourist attractions and surprisingly its water exports. Even though the Fiji water company has only been around for a decade or two, water is the main export of the country. In 2010 the Fiji water factory closed down after the Fijian government raised the taxes on the water from ⅓ 0f a Fijian cent per liter to 15 Fijian cents, but after a couple days, the factory opened back up and agreed to the tax increase. Not only the high taxes on the water are the reason for the high prices though. The shipping of the water from Fiji to the U.S. costs about half of the profits of each bottle. Comment below whether you think that the high prices of Fiji water is a Adaptation, Modification, or a Dependency
-Erik Lamminen

They are nomads that have built their homes on thin poles which hold up to 30 people and can be completed in three weeks. Because they are refugees, they do not have a citizenship causing them to rely on the ocean for water and food. Without it, they couldn’t survive. Starting at eight years old, the children learn survival skills such as how to spear fish, free dive, and how to beg from tourists. Even with little donations from tourists, their main source of money comes from the fishing industry which the ocean provides.

Lake Chad is located in the heart of the Sahel. Lake Chad covers parts of 8 different countries and used to cover an area of 26,000 square kilometers, but in 2000 lake Chad only covered 1,500 square kilometers. The lake is continuing to shrink today. There are many factors that have contributed to the vanishing lake. One includes the varying climate of Sahel. Sahel often has droughts and floods, and these major weather events have played a big part in Lake Chad’s shrinking. Growing terrorist activity has forced more people to seek refuge near lake chad. The growing population has caused issues. The Sahel people are some of the poorest in the world, and their main source of income is from agriculture. Now that there is less water in Lake Chad fishing and farming have become more difficult jobs to keep. Catching fish in Lake Chad is becoming more and more rare as the lake continues to get smaller. There has been conflict between farmers and herders over water because it's hard to have enough for everyone. Most of the people living near the Lake Chad area are living in a state of food insecurity. Lake Chad is continuing to shrink, but there may be hope with the replenishment project. The replenishment project was proposed to help bring Lake Chad back to what it once was. The idea is to build a dam and 60 miles of canal pumps, that will then pump water from the Congo river to the Chan river and then to Lake Chad. This project has not yet happened, and funding will be needed before any construction can start, but maybe one day we will be able to bring Lake Chad back to it’s past size.

Video link with more information:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ipOtuXH3QA

In Paris, France, in the 17th century, as the population started to explode the city started having a major problem. They were out of cemetery space to put the corpses. The solution was to place these dead bodies in the tunnels that lie underneath the city. The residents of Les Halles were not happy. There was a very strong odor of decomposing flesh. In 1763, Louis XV tried to place a ban on all burials inside the Capital. This created major pushback from the Church and nothing ended up happening. Later when Louis XVI took power he tried to continue the efforts to move all cemeteries outside of Paris. Change finally came when the spring rains of 1780, caused major problems for these cemeteries with collapsed walls and rotting corpses. The solution was to remove the bodies and relocate them into catacombs. This was a large task taking about 12 years to completely move between 6-7 million bodies. A portion of these catacombs can be seen today if you want to go on a tour.

In 2011, Ethiopia started construction on The Grand Renaissance Dam in hopes of providing power to millions of their people. It is being built on the Nile River, the longest river in Africa. Ethiopia has 65% of its people without electricity, but the dam should create over 6,000 megawatts for the country. Although the power is essential for Ethiopia’s agricultural and industrial development, it would be a devastating loss for Egypt. Egypt relies on the Nile River for irrigation and the water source for its citizens. By constructing The Grand Renaissance Dam, it would be reducing the amount of water in the river by 25%. Even with the concerns from Egypt, Ethiopia is still continuing to fill the dam to provide power to its citizens.

If you want to learn more, click here: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-50328647

The Theodosian Walls were first built in 408-450 CE, but they were built upon and extended on later. Constantinople was a very wealthy city. It was also filled with universities and libraries. They built the wall to protect the information. Another reason why the wall was built was because of the fall of Rome. Theodosian was surprised and nervous and didn’t want that to happen to Constantinople, so Theodosian set out to build lots of fortifications, to ensure that didn’t happen. This wall was the strongest and biggest ever built in the Ancient worlds. The inner wall was almost 5 meters thick and 12 meters tall. The low wall had a deep ditch, 60 feet wide, and 22 feet deep, which could be filled with water. Then, there was an outer wall and a second wall with a firing platform. There was also a squad of romans with flame throwers. Lastly, there was an even bigger third wall. The city was first breached by knights in 1204 CE. Big sections of the wall are still there in Istanbul. In 1453, the Turks tried to destroy the wall with the cannon that fired a 15 hundred pound ball. After a month and a half, they finally blew a hole in the wall. The Theodosian Wall is a very important piece of history, because it protected the city of Constantinople from attacks or people trying to sneak in and steal books for a very long time. It was very strong and took a lot of effort, time and money to break the wall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNMoi5Af1SY&disable_polymer=true

In 1992 during hurricane Matthew in Cuba six lionfish were accidentally released from an aquarium. In the following years there were even more lionfish that were released by retired aquarium owners. In Cuban waters they have no natural predators, and a single female can reproduce two million eggs a year. In northern waters lionfish were kept in place by the cold water temperatures. But in Cuba’s warm waters it was a breeding ground for lionfish. At this point there are now as many lionfish as there are native groupers.

Impact of Australia’s Wildfires
There have been wide spread wildfires across Australia since their “fire season” started back in July of 2019. This has led to lots of deforestation. The place effected the most is New South Wales, Australia with almost 3000 homes destroyed. Many fires were caused by people purposefully lighting bushfires. Those people were sought out by NSW officials and charged. Another cause of the fires is climate change. Australia’s “fire season” this past year has cause record high temperatures at 113-120°F and very strong winds. This leads to the fires spreading very fast. The fires have destroyed over 17.9 million acres of land, millions of animals have died, and 28 people died. The smoke from the fires have made the air very dangerous and possibly even deadly.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2020/01/08/australian-fires-over-1-billion-animals-feared-dead-experts-say/2845084001/

Bangladesh has rising sea levels and major floods. 3 years ago farmers made up a new way to keep vegetation alive in floods. They have built rafts from hyacinth, bamboo, cow dung, dirt, soil, and other compost. The vegetation will sit on top of the rafts with holes at the bottom for the plants roots having access to the water. When the floods come now the plants will easily sit on top of the water instead underneath. Bangladesh now has a more stable food intake because of the year round farms. Before the floating plants lots of families would lose their jobs during the floods, but now they will keep their steady income.

A unique conservation effort has helped bring the almost extinct snow leopard back. The snow leopards numbers had declined in recently as hunters wanted their pelts and farmers killed them to protect livestock. There are up to 140 cats in the Wakhan National Park, established two years ago across 4,200 square miles. The WCS believes that instead of the previously estimated 7,500 there could be 800 in just 44% of the animals known habitat. They had collected around 5,000 images of the snow leopards. They had also managed to capture four leopards and were able to track them with GPS collars. The population of around 17,000 lives off of subsistence farming meaning that the livestock killing snow leopards were seen as a menace. The snow leopards do provide a way for Wakhan to make money through tourism.
