In the beginning of the chapter, we are introduced with Ralph and Jack arguing about the beast. Jack complains that they are powerless against the beast and Ralph is a coward of a leader. Soon we see the growing division between Ralph and Jack as Jack rebels against the group because of his disagreement for Ralph as a leader. Enraged, Jack leaves the group saying that anyone else is welcome to join him. This signifies the downfall of civilisation and the active hostility between Ralph and Jack's group. As well as the division in groups, Jack's group shows us the loss of innocence in the children as they kill a pig and pursuit the other group in a savage frenzy. Although we see this hostile relationship between Ralph and Jack's group, Simon slips away into the jungle and is met with the pig's head impaled on a stick. The pig's head appears to become alive and talks to Simon in the voice of 'The Lord the Flies'. Talking to Simon, he becomes the first to realise that he cannot escape the beast, for he lies within all human beings.

The beast: The beast talks to simon in the form of the sow's head which was recently cut off. He claims to be the lord of the flies and says that there is no escape from him as he is all within them. This is shown through the savagery in all the kids.

The Concept of good and evil is further highlighted in this chapter as Ralph's group attempts to find a more peaceful way out of the island where as jack embraces the island and his ferocious instinct begins to kick in foreshadowing the eventual death of Simon, ultimately creating a rivalry of leaderships .

They start to believe offering the beast a share of the kill will make it leave them alone.
This means the Boys are starting to revert to primal instinct of savagery that is found in all human beings by worshipping a something they are frightened of.
We learn that Simon does not fit neatly into the spectrum created by Jack at one end and Ralph at the other. This is because Simon is kindhearted. Simon's closeness with nature and his kind nature makes him the only character who does not think that morals are a imposition of society.

Whereas Jack and Roger connect to the wilderness on a level that plunges them into a primal lust for Violence and power.

"This Head is for the Beast. It a Gift."
The head is meant to be a gift for the beast, but later becomes a manifestation of the beast itself - which means that violence and savagery make the beast real.

“[Ralph is] like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.”
To Jack, intelligence is incompatible with strength, and the latter is necessary to be a chief. Because Ralph uses logic and reasoning like Piggy does, according to Jack, he can’t be fit to be the boys’ leader.
