'Warm breath of the brown river' - dirtiness, unhygienic

  • 'mostly white frame, weathered grey' - white symbolises innocence/ purity which has faded. Blanche wears white when she arrives-foreshadowing that her innocence may also fade 
  • 'easy intermingling of races'- there isn't any racial segregation or discrimination, showing how different New Orleans is to the rest of the south.
  • 'Elysian Fields'- links to Greek mythology of a paradise, which it obviously isn't. The last streetcar that Blanche rode was called 'Cemeteries', linking to the idea of a Paradise.
