I'm just wondering about the process of composition - do the students have an iPad keyboard with them while they are composing (i.e. filling in the worksheet) - so that they would be able to make musical decisions about the melody (e.g. step skip leap), and how it would sound. Also wondering about the idea of using rhythmic repetition / melodic contours to create patterns in the music.

Very inspiring work! Thank you for sharing! =)

My background is in Western Classical music, and my composition assignments as a student were always individual and instrumental. I've been learning to adapt my teaching to a world where music composition is increasingly collaborative and technology-based, and I think your module really does offer students an insight into the music industry today while honing their compositional thinking. I also like how you created a safe and open space for inquiry and critical thinking (e.g. through simple things like giving the example of toilet music, which students will probably find funny but will lead them to reflect on the pervasiveness of music into all aspects of life and the purposes that it serves), which helps students to see things around them in a new light (:

We have been using Garageband with our P6 students but limiting them to one instrument: Keyboard. The idea of allowing them to choose their own instruments and adding layers provides them with a choice and empowers them in their creation :)

To me, it really illustrates the importance of thinking creatively about the affordances of technology - in this case, the use of a notational software as a compositional tool due to the playback function, allowing for immediate audio feedback. Like Ee Sin, I too am quite hesitant to teach standard notation to my students, but I really like the organic way in which students acquire notational concepts while creating their compositions, and I will consider trying out in the future (:

May I know which level you conducted this module with?
Hi, Jay and Rachel. Thanks for this sharp and short presentation. Yes, when uncertainty strikes, flipped teaching comes in handy. During the lockdown period, I've flipped the learning for students and they have become more self-directed learners and or involved their families to join the fun. So I will definitely consider this method for some lessons, even if not in the HBL setting.

So for me, checking the students' works posted another challenge. Nonetheless, appreciate your sharing on your routine to teach the students to compose from scratch!

Hi Sabrina, thanks for your sharing on how you apply DI and UDL in your classroom teaching with SEN students. It takes a village to raise a child and what's more to a class of 31 with 6 SEN children and it definitely takes a very concerted effort for you to go through individual profiling of them in order to design meaningful lessons for them.

Really love your lesson ideas and impressed with how well you have facilitated the lessons to allow the students be self-directed in their learning!

Totally agree that some of the Samba music content can be not so age-appropriate for the students and it's a great idea to create our own webpage for such content! :)

Wow ... I love the way you design and scope the Music task. I can see a lot of relevance of your lessons in today's world. It is indeed true that sometimes I find it hard to distinguish the quality of work between the Express and NA students, which is good news. Even in a Full SBB class where the NT students 'uncompromising' behaviour is fairly, more has to be done to help them to stay on course and to complete the task.

Hi Carmen, thank you for the insightful sharing! As a BT, I tend to fixate on how to teach musical skills more effectively, so your presentation was a timely reminder that SEL is really central to music teaching too (:

This year, I had a group project as the culmination of my guitar module, and I observed my students doing some of the things that your students did too (e.g. some groups problem-solved using the tools they had by making a collage of the guitar chords they were using for easy reference). I didn't really think too much of it at that time, but thinking back, these are important aspects of the learning experiences that we design for our students as well. Thanks for highlighting that to me, so that I can be more intentional in encouraging SEL in my music lessons in the future (especially with FSBB next year and music lessons being one of the few lessons where the class is together)!
