Eric Otten and Chase Osborne---The Japanese Americans were interned for multiple reasons. First, the timeline states “12/7/1941 Japan bombed the U.S. Pearl Harbor military base in Hawaii.” This means that this would put the Americans on edge with everyone that looks Japanese might be a threat because of what the Japanese did at Pearl Harbor. Next, document B states “The Intelligence Services are generous with the title of suspect and are taking no chances.” This means that the Intelligence Services are on super high alert and will not tolerate any signs of deviance from the Japanese Americans. Finally, document D states “Korematsu was not excluded from the Military Area because of hostility to him or his race. He was excluded because we are at war with the Japanese Empire.” This means that Korematsu was not really doing anything wrong but he was overruled because the Americans were afraid of Japanese people.

Chase Osborne and Eric Otten- Japanese Americans were interned during World War II for multiple reasons. One reason is because the timeline states, “Japan bombed the U.S. Pearl Harbor military base in Hawaii.” This caused America to be suspicious of all Japanese Americans.
Nick sims and Gabby Oke -America put Japanese in internment because first, Japan bombed Pearl harbor. Japan bombed the U.S. Pearl Harbor military base in Hawaii in 1941.They also thought there might be sabotage from japan people. If the government thought they might backlash they might not want to take the chance and would put them in camps. Finally, Widespread ignorance about Americans of Japanese descent contributed to a policy conceived in haste and executed in an atmosphere of fear and anger at Japan. Japanese thinking that we were ignorant and angry towards us made us even more fearful. In conclusion, America put the Japanese in internment because they bombed Pearl Harbor, they thought there might be sabotage, and finally, the Japanese thought of America badly.

The Japanese Americans were interned during World War II because of racial prejudice, war hysteria, and unreasonable military action. The internment where unfair to the people being put in them and could be considered illegal military action and caused by racial prejudice. This is shown in a quote from Personal Justice Denied “Executive Order 9066 was not justified by military necessity, and the decisions that followed from it—exclusion, detention, the ending of detention and the ending of exclusion—were not founded upon military conditions. The broad historical causes that shaped these decisions were race prejudice, war hysteria and a failure of political leadership.” Japanese Americans are being targeted because they are people of color. This is shown in the Crisis Article “Color seems to be the only possible reason why thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry are in concentration camps. Anyway, there are no Italian-American, or German-American citizens in such camps.” They are justifying their cruelty by saying war is hard on everyone. This shown in the Korematsu v. United States case “We uphold the exclusion order. . . .
Alaina Olson and Shaye Dowdell

The Japanese Americans were interned in WW2 from racial bias, war hysteria, overall ignorance. The racial bias is shown by The Crisis Article from September 1942. “from a military point of view, the only danger is on the coast is from Germany and Italy... not taken any such high-handed action against Germans and Italians – and their American-born descendants – on the East Coast, as has been taken against Japanese and their American-born descendants on the West Coast. Germans and Italians are “white.” This shows the Japanese were in camps not because of the danger they bring but because of the racial bias withheld against them. Overall ignorance was a prominent reason for the Japanese to be held in a government camp and Permanite Justice Denied from Feb 24 1983 explains this. “The broad historical causes that shaped these decisions were race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership. Widespread ignorance about Americans of Japanese descent contributed to a policy conceived in haste and executed in an atmosphere of fear and anger at Japan”. This shows overall ignorance because many of the reasons for the Japanese to be held in camps were not associated with the actual dangers of war. Lastly, War hysteria was a major cause of the concentration camps Korematsu v. United States from 1944 shows this. “The only reason he was excluded in this was because of war with the Japanese Empire”. This shows prior events like the war did affect decisions involving Japanese justice in the USA and caused them to be sent to government camps.

Finally, The Munson Report, released in November of 1941, states: “There will undoubtedly be some sabotage financed by Japan and executed largely by imported agents. . .” In translation, the government speculates that there will be Japanese intervention with the military, and noticing how this was written before Pearl Harbor shows how suspicious the U.S. was of Japan. Meaning that Pearl Harbor was the tipping point for the United States.
In conclusion, the U.S. Government interned Japanese Americans because of fear of the Japanese, racism, and suspicion of Japanese sabotage.

The Japanese Americans were interned during World War II because unfair prejudices. In the “Japanese American Incarceration Timeline” there is proof that the American government could have decided to put Japanese Americans in internment camps because they thought Japanese Americans might be mad about unfair treatment in the past. Americans had done things in the past (annex Hawaii which was largely populated by Japanese people, and Japanese immigration to the U.S., made all Japanese students attend conjoined classes with Chinese and Korean students, ect) and were probably scared that Japanese Americans might want to punish America and think that this was a perfect time to. In “The Crisis Article” written September 1942, it says “Color seems to be the only possible reason why thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry are in concentration camps. Anyway, there are no Italian-American, or German-American citizens in such camps.” This quote is saying that Japanese Americans were interned only because of their race and had nothing to do with the idea of protecting Japanese Americans. Finally, in the “Ken Hirata Interview” he tells his interviewer that Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps and were told it was for their safety against angry Americans, when really Americans were afraid of them. The internment camps were guarded and had guns pointing at them. He said that the government gave everyone who was in internment camps $20,000 years later, so the government obviously recognized that it made a huge mistake in the past and are now trying to compensate for it. Ken Hirata says the money didn’t even begin to cover the damage done.

Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps for many reasons such as fear of betrayal, the color of their skin, and fear of an invasion of the west coast. One reason that the Japanese Americans were being forced into internment camps was that many Americans were worried that Japanese Americans would betray them. The Japanese Americans were watched on surveillance, according to the Munson Report, “...merely a speech in favor of Japan at some banquet being sufficient to land one there.” Meaning that Americans were worried about having people with Japanese origins betray them. It was so intense that they were being watched constantly to see if they would betray America. Another reason Japanese Americans were put in internment camps was because of the color of their skin. From the Crisis article, we get a large piece of information. “From a military point of view, the only danger on this coast is from Germany and Italy. . . . But the American government has not taken any such high-handed action against Germans and Italians… Germans and Italians are “white.” Color seems to be the only possible reason why thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry are in concentration camps.” Meaning that Japanese Americans were discriminated against which is why they were forced into internment camps. Lastly, Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps because military officers were worried that there would be an invasion of the west coast. According to the Korematsu v. United States document, “Korematsu was not excluded from the Military Area because of hostility to him or his race. He was excluded because we are at war with the Japanese Empire, because the . . . military authorities feared an invasion of our West Coast and . . . because they decided that the military urgency of the situation demanded that all citizens of Japanese ancestry be segregated from the West Coast temporarily,” This means that many military leaders were worried that the Japanese would invade the west coast so many Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps.

The Japanese Americans were interned during World War II for many different reasons. First, The Munson Report says “President Roosevelt questioned the loyalty of Japanese Americans.” This quote shows that Japanese Americans may not be loyal to Japan. Our second piece of evidence is stated by Chief justice Hugo Black “He was excluded because we are at war with the Japanese Empire because the . . . military authorities feared an invasion of our West Coast and . . . because they decided that the military urgency of the situation demanded that all citizens of Japanese ancestry be segregated from the West Coast temporarily,”. This shows that all citizens who are of Japanese ancestry would be segregated from the west coast because of the fact that America feared an attack from the west and thought the civilians might try to help the Japanese. Lastly, the Personal Justice Denied document states “The Commission held 20 days of hearings in cities across the country, particularly on the West Coast, hearing testimony from more than 750”. This tells us that there are plenty of witnesses to prove why most mainland Japanese Americans were in concentration camps. Therefore, all the evidence and reasoning above explains why the Japanese Americans were interned during WWII.
