Something that didn't surprise me but I'm glad to have a name for it now is "the silent period." Students that I worked with were very unlikely to speak with me for the first week or so when I was working with them, and the teacher I worked with told me that it was because the students wanted to be perfect. That went away after a few weeks though, because I would make mistakes while teaching and then laugh at my own mistakes. I didn't like to take language mistakes too seriously.

One thing that surprised me was number 12 on the list, talking about teachers making sure to take their students seriously, despite their language barriers. I had never thought about that being something that needed to be said, but I've definitely witnessed teachers getting caught up in the delivery of a student's message, rather than the message itself. I've seen teachers focus too much on trying to put together every word that the sentence is supposed to have, even though they can almost always understand the main point of the message, even if some filler words are missing.

I work with preschoolers, and have often seen students who are a bit behind with developing language have a “silent period”. They become so frustrated that they can’t communicate what they want to say that they decide silence is better. It is helpful to know that this is common among emergent bilinguals too. A question I have is: How can you encourage language development without pressuring the student to speak?

The article discusses the possibility of a silent period, and I was curious about the specific ques to know when this silent period is because of the reasons stated by the article. Or, if there are also other reasons that can induce a silent period. Is a silent period always okay, or is there a silent period that should raise concern?

It was interesting to connect these 12 points with many of the things we have discussed in class. The respect towards students' native languages and their cultures really stood out to me, along with knowing how to correctly pronounce everyone's names. The silent period that students may have while they are growing their confidence is something that I feel I went through in my high school Spanish class, because I wanted whatever I said to be "perfect" before I said it. Lastly, I am glad the point was made regarding how impressive it is to be learning English, and that ELL students are actually doing twice the work than others even if it looks like much less than that.

Something that really stood out was how "microaggressions" were brought up. The troubles that I've seen with ELL students is that so often people are ignorant and are quick to assume, rather than simply ask. I don't know how often I've seen people from other countries, such as Guatemala, Argentina, El Savador, and Colombia be mistaken for Mexican just because they spoke Spanish. I feel when we make these comments to students, they don't feel like they're really being seen, or where they're from is acknowledged, and just being placed into a pre-made mold for Spanish speakers.

This article shows how beneficial using visual elements for instruction is for ELL students. Technology is a great way to do this to allow students the opportunity to see rather than simply hear what is being said as it is often harder to process spoken words.

I think it’s a really good idea to give EL students materials ahead of class so they have an opportunity to work with them in more than one setting and repeatedly reference it. It made me think about my classes and when I’m able to do the readings before class vs. when I am not able to prepare for class by doing the readings. If I’m not able to work with the materials before the class it makes it really hard for me to fully understand.

It was very sensible to honor the “silent period”. This may not be the most effective help to learn English, but ELL will take time to learn English and should be able to respect it. As an ELL, it was the most comforting of the below 12. In particular, I 100% agree with that they should be perfect in speaking English, so they were very reluctant to speak until they felt some degree of perfection. So I also have a lot of pressure to make a presentation in English in class. However if this moment is forced upon me, I get under a lot of pressure and if I screw up my presentation, I get depressed the whole day. Because my inadequacy is revealed and somehow I feel like I failed. Waiting for words to open up and be able to speak your mind is a great psychological benefit, if not technically.
