I am sad to share I did not have a deep love for reading in my later years of elementary. Reading was a chore, I was forced to read material I was not interested in. I had other interests besides reading and I was not encouraged to find a love for it. My saving grace came when we read "Island of the Blue Dolphin" in 5th grade. I can honestly say that was the ONLY book I remember liking during this time in my life.

My lack of love for reading continues. I am forced to read for AR points. I do the minimal amount to keep good grades but I am not falling in love with books. I remember being annoyed with how much I did not like reading and really wanted to enjoy it. I was smart, made good grades, but did not pick up a book in my spare time. The reading I DID do was for Bible Studies, so again, it was "assigned" reading. When people talk about books they read during this time, I am not able to remember very many. I knew I was going to be a teacher early in life and made a commitment to be sure my students love reading.

I'm in love. I will be a teacher that helps students find a love for reading. I make sure my enthusiasm for reading is contagious. I work to give students confidence and help them find books they will love and enjoy. I allow "choice" and exposure to genres. I am intentional in noticing students that need extra support for finding love in literature. I try to not make reading "work". I feel successful with student response

I was not a child who struggled with reading. I was a high reader and felt confident. I don't know what happened to me in my elementary days to lose that love of reading. I only remember not liking it and looking at reading as a chore. This has inspired everything about me as a reading teacher. I am not a part of social reading groups but I can see I would enjoy that.

Two words: Harry. Potter. Why was there not someone in my life when all the Harry Potter books were coming out, encouraging me to read these? I finally read my first one in college and was hooked! Harry Potter is by far my favorite series. I can not wait to read these with my own children and share that love of literature with them.

When I think of children's books, I think of my mother's best friend, Beth. Beth did not have children of her own so she showered my sister and I with children's books for special occasions and holidays. My sister and I still talk about Beth when we see titles of books she bought us. We still have these books till this day and of course keep in touch with her. She had a great eye, and gave us some classics that will never go out of style.
