Reading was a chore, I was forced to read material I was not interested in. I had other interests besides reading and I was not encouraged to find a love for it. My saving grace came when we read "Island of the Blue Dolphin" in 5th grade. I will be a teacher that helps students find a love for reading. I make sure my enthusiasm for reading is contagious. I work to give students confidence and help them find books they will love and enjoy. I allow "choice" and exposure to genres. I am intentional in noticing students that need extra support for finding love in literature. I try to not make reading "work". Potter. Why was there not someone in my life when all the Harry Potter books were coming out, encouraging me to read these? I finally read my first one in college and was hooked! Harry Potter is by far my favorite series. Beth did not have children of her own so she showered my sister and I with children's books for special occasions and holidays. My sister and I still talk about Beth when we see titles of books she bought us. We still have these books till this day and of course keep in touch with her.
