Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (e.g. plastic bottles, and bags etc..) in the Earth's environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitats and humans. Plastics are inexpensive and durable making them very adaptable for different uses; as a result levels human produce a lot of plastic.

Look around you. Right now. How much plastic can you see? Food containers, plastic bottles, pens, even your phone cover, the list is endless. Despite its ubiquity, the effects of plastic pollution on human health remain mostly unknown to the majority of people. Have you ever thought about the negative effects of the plastic pollution that we’re increasing day-by-day on your health?

Society has become completely dependent on plastic, yet we rarely stop and wonder how this material might be affecting our health. Toxic additives are often added to plastic in order to improve its properties. Many of these additives do not bind to the chemical chain of plastic which means they can be released in the environment when exposed to various atmospheric conditions. These additives can be absorbed by the skin, evaporate into the air or absorbed via the food or drinks we consume. It is important to know exactly what additives are used and take steps to avoid them to reduce the harmful effects of plastic on human health as all of them are highly toxic in nature.

You may have seen viral videos of an animal like a dog or raccoon walking around with a peanut butter jar or the like stuck on its head. While some may find this comical, the end result for many animals is actually no laughing matter. Food containers were generally made for knives or spoons to be dipped into them, or to have their contents poured out. They certainly weren’t made for serving up tasty morsels to hungry animals. An animal with its head stuck in a plastic food container may suffer from overheating, suffocation, dehydration, starvation, and eventual death from these elements. It is also not equipped to defend itself from a threat.

Plastics don’t belong in a lot of places and a belly is one of them! Animals may mistake plastic for food, or they may consume plastic in the process of eating the leftover food it contains. Either way, it does no good for a tummy that belongs to a dog, a crow, or a cow. Plastic stands to cause intestinal blockages in an animal that consumes it. Death is the ultimate tragedy for animals that consume plastic and this is a sad fate that both wild and domestic animals alike can face.

How does plastic affect the environment among oceans? Commercial fishermen will routinely discard plastic nets, fishing lines, galley utensils and other harvesting equipment. In so doing, they inadvertently expose marine ecosystems to BPA. Some research indicates that BPA harmfully impacts the reproduction and fetal growth of certain undersea species.

Of course, other plastic products litter the seas, as well, including beverage bottles, Styrofoam cups and trash bags. These items are often eaten by sea turtles and birds that mistake them for food. Once ingested, the plastic can wreak havoc on the intestinal tracts of these creatures, blocking necessary nutrients and causing premature death. The vibrancy of marine biodiversity suffers from the abundance of plastic debris.
