As with many methods, I have noticed that some learners respond very positively to collaborative approaches while others don't. It is crucial to find topics that fit the approach (e.g. making a book trailer) and to alternate it with others in order to offer a sensible mix. Additionally, evaluation is an important issue. The school environment can be a problem: restricted time, space, standardized tests do not work well with collaboration. Ironically, I find working with European colleagues on eTwinning to be easier sometimes than discussing issues with the teacher next door.

Collaborative learing to me is provide the opportunity to your students to work togheter on learing new things, but also learn how to work in a (small) group. I only have 4 students in my class so they often work in pairs (by 2) I give them some video material on a subject and they learn more about the subject by making exercises togheter and by exploring and then give feeback to the rest of the class. I have some experience about collaborative learning and I think it is a very interesting way to put students at the forefront of their learning activities, showing them that all depends on how they face the challenges waiting for them.
The best way to learn is to be the protagonist, and the best way to make them such is to design the right path to experience: it should be branched, far reaching, flowing without jumps and possibly compelling; it should be the unnoticed background of their journey to awareness.
This is why I'm here: to find that path!
In my experience collaborative learning enhances achievements, attitudes, engagement, retention, ... but is still a classroom activity: what I'm looking for is a way to let students feel they are not at school, but free and at the centre of their lives, doing what it takes to strengthen themselves, not what it is needed to get a good grade...

I agree with the definition of collaborative learning given in the video and this year at school I'm using collaborative learning in my classes working with the strategy of the flipped classroom. Whenever I implement any meaningful and team work among my students, letting them using tablets, they love what they do. Surprisingly, the noise all around sounds like productive. They are challenged, stimulated and they ask for more because they feel they are doing something "important" and useful. Both good and weak students seem to retain more than the traditional lesson. From the academic achievement point of view, maybe they won't learn all the rules the book suggests, which are multiple, but they can still learn the basic lesson properly. All the skills the UNESCO listed are surely enhanced.

I'have always been quite skeptical about collaborative learning because in my experience it means dividing the class in groups and giving them a task. But when I did so, there were always few students who worked on the task and many others that weren't focused on it. The problem is that I don't really know how to manage this method! As it happens in real life, when you work together with you peers sharing ideas and facing problems, you learn much better and with more gratification then when you face a problem alone. Moreover, collaboration enhances interpersonal skills, which are very useful nowadays. I'm not an expert about collaborative learning so I haven't witnessed how much this methodology can improve my students' skills. By the way I hope to use this kind of teaching approach very soon!

I have had some opportunities to practice collaborative and cooperative learning and teaching thanks and through eTwinning projects. For their nature they are student centered and foster many of the skills mentioned in the video above. Through eTwinning project students are encouraged to share risponsability in the group in carrying out activities which can lead to the achievement of tangible result. The role of teachers is naturally changed and they act more as counselor and facilitators. I have a lot of cooperative learning experience. Caroline talks about collaborative learning as a different thing, but the ingredients that mentions (positive interdependence, individual accountability, and interpersonal skills) are exactly the ingredients of cooperative learning.
The Kagan structures are only one way to structure the interdependence.
The Jigsaw, for example, cannot be trivially interpreted as chopping a task into pieces to be assigned to different students.
In my opinion, the essential point are the performance tasks. The teacher must design a task beyond individual skills. Otherwise, the usefulness of teamwork vanishes, and Hattie is right that the benefits of collaborative learning are invisible.

I have been trying to implement collaborative learning in my teaching through project work, mainly in e-twinning projects but also in smaller scale ones. It is about learning together, sharing, negotiating, acting according to one's skills or talents, exchanging, leading and following, tolerating and co-operating. These are all very difficult for young kids as at this age they are not mature enough to work together towards a common goal as they are quite self-centred and antagonistic. I use it on my ICT classes but also on Biology and Geology. We start to form small groups and students have roles to play like the team leader, the conflict moderator, the communicator, each student must have interventive part on all process. I believe in collaborative working amongst students and adults alike. When you meet up in a small group, different ideas are shared and you learn a lot from your peers and vice versa. With regards to young students, a mediator, such as an adult teacher should be there to make sure that everyone is participating and understanding so the leaders won't take over. Collaborative learning I take as being learning which is facilitated by each other, in a group. Sharing thoughts, opinions, helping each other understand through sharing explanations. Guiding one another in a common task, project etc.
Challenges can arise due to students personalities. Some can be complacent, others dominant, some students take the lead too much, whilst others choose a less involved role. Negotiating the individuals participation can be a difficult task.

I have a very small class with children from 5 - 12 years old. The students sometimes work in same age groups and sometimes in mixed age groups. I see them develop active listening skills and observe how they negotiate with each other to produce the best outcome they can manage. I am sometimes asked if mixed age working disadvantages older students because they will always be supporting the younger ones but I find that the younger ones often challenge the older ones' thinking.

In my experience, collaborative learning also happens informally when students work towards a common goal by sharing responsability. Their level of engagement and overall attitudes towards learning improve, no doubt. The social skills they develop also enhance their coping strategies and self-confidence. Collaborative learning strategies benefit mixed ability classes as well as special needs students. However, large classes of 30 students are a challenge.

For me the collaborative work assumes as its name indicates, collaborate with peers. In my classes, in general, students work in two to three learning groups. I once used collaborative writing with primary students where they were expected to write, paint and eventually present a story. What is collaborative learning?
What do you understand collaborative learning to mean? In your experience of implementing collaborative learning in the classroom, have you witnessed academic achievement, student attitudes, engagement and retention being enhanced? What about the skills mentioned in the video – have you witnessed your students develop these as a result of collaborative learning?
In my opinion collaborative learning is an opened process in which the teacher is a simply facilitator and students learn forward their working together in small groups toward a common goal. They also have to share responsibility, give feedback, negotiate and work interdependently.
Why do we have to work with collaboration? Because it enhances academic achievement, student attitudes (e.g. openness to diversity), student engagement and retention. In addition, promotes specific skills like leadership competences, self-evaluation, listening skills, presentation skills, skills of persuasion and negotiation, team working skills.
During my teaching experiences, I tried to apply collaboration work but I’m pretty sure that my students got only team working skills, persuasion and negotiation skills, digital skills and a better retention of the knowledge.

This school year I decided to change my classroom and start putting my students to work collaboratively. I changed the layout of the desks in classrooms (now in small islands), changed the way the activities are going to develop (each group of students must complete a set of mini tasks to get to the production of a project proposed by me ). I totally agree with the idea that Collaborative Learning is not the same as working together, and as a teacher, I think that it is very difficult to get that our students take on a commitment to collaborate, to give feedback, to share responsibility, etc. As teachers, we should plan a lot of things in order to achieve the success of our students' learning when working in a collaborative way. In Italy we work often with 3 or more teachers in one class at the Primary School. Personally I'm convinced that my students need to start to develop collaboration skills at an early age BUT THERE FOR, we need to work together as teachers. In a world where information is available and accessible with one click, schools have to promote among students new skills, in addition to those that have traditionally made their focus. Students must become builders of their own learning. For this, they have to know how to collect and critically analyze the available information and solve problems creatively. Communication skills (to listen and to speak) must be encouraged, as well as leadership skills and teamwork. This path can be done using collaborative learning processes where group work takes place and where the teacher ceases to be the transmitter of knowledge and pass into the role of promoter and facilitator of learning.
As a teacher of students with sixteen-eighteen years old, I can say that the collaborative learning activities are greatly appreciated by them, being visible their interest, involvement and implication. In general, all students take their responsibilities and understand that their participation in the group is important to the success of the collective working group. (But sometimes the teacher intervention is necessary!!!).

Students like to find solutions to the challenges that are posed to them and enjoy creating new products that love sharing with colleagues at the end. They also like to get feedback on their work and, over time, begin to understand the importance of constructive criticism to improve their learning and their work.

Yes, definitely, I witnessed big changes in my students' attitudes, both in the high and in the lower achievers. I insist on each of them taking responsibility for the success of the group as a whole: I tend to assign them different roles in the group, in order to enhance individual accountability, but I always make clear that the final product will be evaluated as a whole. I like watching them work (I don't really bother if they're a little bit louder, provided they are really collaborating) and I often realize how better they are at solving problems when I step back and let them free to try their own way.

The video has helped me reflect on the meaning of collaborative learnng. In fact I often try to get my students work in groups and I have often felt frustrated becasue I realized several critical things: for example, the students are not used to working in groups, so some of them worked and some else did not, this fact produced complainings and a sort of resistance to work in groups. So not everyone was really engaged according to my experiences.
When I asked them to present their work only one or two spoke the other two kept silent although I encouraged them to take part in the presentation. It is only one teacher among the oTherefore, By watching the video I have to admit that I was not able to manage the lesson in the proper way, This means that I have to learn and improve to manage collaboration among my students, However I also think that it is a hard work if only one teacher uses this methodology and the majority of teachers just trasmit ontents for the students to repeat later in a sort of assemment. I am aware that in this way students do not create anything and their learning is passive ; they just aim to get good scores, they are not used to self-assessmnet and peer- evaluation. When I asked them to do so the students criticized me because assessment for them is the teachers work rather than the students’. Collaborative learning is a process.

Collaborative learning help students to learn from each other. The students of a class are divided in small groups that work on ONE common goal.

The teacher acts here permanently as a accompanist to the learning. (supervisor, coach)

The teacher need to:

- help the students to develop the necessary skills (feedback, listen to it..);

- defined clearly the task with the specific objectives.

3 components:

Please note:

* The students are not free to do what they want.

* The pupils work together and not individually.

Experience:

In September last year I gave some collaborative and cooperative lessons in the fourth year (15-years-old students).

I was very motivated to motivate the students. The result was a burn-out.

It took me hours work. Unfortunately, the process was not understood and not accepted by the Executive Board as well as by some parents, students and colleagues.

Innovation is widely tolerated, except in the education that I know of.

In my career, the most significant experiences of collaborative learning are related with simulations of enterprise creation, events organization, e-twinning projects.

In these activities, that were carried out in small-groups, students were searching for information and were debating, identifying strong and weak points of each member of the group, considering how to improve them, making decisions.

I observed important improvements of academic achievement, student attitudes, engagement and retention, as well as enhancement of self-evaluation skills, listening, negotiation and team working.

Collaborative learning is where teachers and students actively work together to improve student understanding and knowledge (and to improve the teacher in their role as facilitator of knowledge). What do you understand collaborative learning to mean?

The most important, in my opinion, is that the teacher must create and manage "meaningful learning experiences and stimulate learners’ thinking through real-world problems". Otherwise the experience does not make sense.

Collaborative learning is not what most of us do in the classroom when we limit ourselves to form groups of students that after some time have to present a conclusion on the issue / activity previously asked.

Collaborative learning is a process through which there is the construction of knowledge by the students not the teacher who should be a guide on the side and not a sage on the stage. In this process the focus must be in the student who is supposed to follow well defined guidelines and objectives in order to arrive at some conclusions after having discussed the topics/issues with the peers.

I think that collaborative learning is working together towards a common goal. The group works on each aspect of the project / task together. As a student teacher, I have limited experience of collaborative learning, but in my classes I try to do some form of group-work, with common goals as the outcome. After my research I realized that collaborative learning is a resource that arises from the need to insert interactive methodologies among the students, together with the teacher to create research, understanding and interpretation of information of certain matters. Students are more active and collaborative. Teaching is student-centered and learning is deeper.

Collaborative learning (CL) is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. The term CL refers to an instruction method in which learners at various performance levels work together in small groups toward a common goal. Five fundamental elements involved in CL, are: Positive interdependence, Individual and group accountability, Interpersonal and small group skills, Face-to- face promotive interaction, and Group processing.

In my experience of implementing collaborative learning in the classroom, I've witnessed being enhanced academic achievement, student attitudes, engagement and retention. I've have witnessed my students develop these as a result of collaborative learning

As a non teacher I assume from what I've learned so far in Co-LAB that collaborative learning is a process where students learn through doing a task together, whererk is not divided, but everyone's input contributes to the result. As this is collaborative learning, and not just any kind of collaborative activity, it would require that students learn new knowledge or develop skills while collaborating.

The very dictionary definition of collaboration will tell us what collaborative learning means. The word "collaboration" brings together the Latin "col-" meaning "with or together" with the Latin "labor" or toil.

In fact, I think Collaborative Learning consists on "a variety of educational approaches involving joint intellectual effort by students, or students and teachers together". It is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task or create a product.

I believe Collaborative Learning is a vital component of 21st century classroom education. The 21st Century Competencies set goals and raise standards in a way that change the educational bar for students, requiring us, teachers, to push for higher skills, adjusting what and how we teach our kids.

Collaborative Learning encourages new ideas and challenges students to explore opinions, to discuss and share their thoughts, ideas and beliefs, to thoughtfully articulate - and finally, defend - them to small groups of diverse students. This practice leads students to start constructing their own ideas, beliefs and framework. Learners converse and exchange diverse beliefs and are actively engaged in the discovery process. The development of crucial critical thinking skills and a departure from group-think, are the desired outcomes.

I do see Collaborative Learning as a very useful tool in class. When we have a big class, working in small groups does provide them the necessary room to engage in activities and develop skills that would not be acquired or put into test, such as interpersonal skills (specially for the shy ones); leadership (in a big class it´s nearly impossible to have so many leaders) etc. I think the main issue is when we have to follow the book and not students learning process.
