The 1960’s apparently started off as a new golden decade with JFK becoming president and people confident because JFK had stood up for racial injustice and invented Medicare for the poor and low income. but through the decade it became very turbulent and dark, first of all the Vietnam War started which was one of the darkest wars in history(1968)and JFK was murdered. Even while this was happening this is when anti war campaigns and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for the African Americans in the U.S.

The 1960’s were a crucial part of US history. In this decade people were opened up to the idea that segregation was unfair, who would of thought! This decade included Martin Luther King Jr.’s peaceful protests and Malcom X’s calls to action. In this decade civil rights became a thing, and segregation was abolished. A important factor was JFK. He was a supporter of civil rights for all races. This lead him to being killed. His successor Lyndon B. Johnson passed a law that abolished segregation.

During the 1960’s, lots of people were protesting against the Vietnam war, segregation was ended but racism and poverty still made life hard for the colored. President Johnson had a lot of votes but he started getting hate for his pro Vietnam policies. A senator from Minnesota named Eugene McCarthy announced that he was going to challenge him for the democratic presidential nomination. A few days later after McCarthy’s candidacy was validated, Robert F. Kennedy decided to stop supporting Johnson and started running for president. Then Robert was assasinated. Protesters took over Lincoln park and there was a lot of violence over there, people were getting tear gassed and it was chaos.

The event that is now known as Woodstock, which was a huge three day long music festival where half a million people gathered to see live performances of famous artists, and just have fun.
