Cthulhu is the main monster that recurs throughout the short story. Lovecraft goes into great detail of Cthulhu when he describes the monster as, "A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful." The author combines specific parts of different animals to emphasize how unusual and frightening Cthulhu is as a monster. Cthulhu to The reader can clearly understand how monstrous and horrific the character is on a physical level. Although Lovecraft does not focus on the psychology of Cthulhu as much as other characters, Cthulhu's multiple violent actions towards Johansen and the voyagers provide another element that portrays the character as the frightening, dangerous monster.

The ocean is well known in literature as a place of mystery and ambiguity. The vast, dark nature feeds into the gothic fear of the unknown as it is unclear what horrors could be concealed by the dark waters. This is the case in "The Call of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft, as the narrator is met with accounts of the dark ocean and huge waves when learning of an encounter with Cthulhu. In addition to this, as Thurston reads the account of the "Alert," we learn of the stormy setting and violent ocean associated with that day. This all adds to the fear and chaos experienced by the crew as they approach the unknown island, yet other source of mystery. This dark setting not only represents, but mirrors the negative aspects of human nature present within all of society.

Visual Motifs in Film

Films are able to manipulate various elements in order to create a specific mood and further convey various messages. One way filmmakers can accomplish such is through the use of color. Setting, wardrobe, and character complexion are many outlets by which visual manipulation can occur. Movies of the Gothic nature, for example, typically use more dark, muted colors, such as greys. This sets a mood characterized by fear and suspense. Removing all life from the colors in a sense reflects the lack of vitality in many characters within the genre. Colors are often associated with emotion and the absence of such can be used to convey the dark nature of mankind.

Motif: Unstable Characters

Cthulhu is a critical character who creates chaos in the setting and in multiple characters. Because of this, many characters grew unstable like two of the voyagers by the name of Briden and Johansen. When the voyagers made their way to the city where Cthulhu resides, the monster acts out in a violent manner towards almost all of the men, resulting in the deaths of many voyagers. A few of the men became unbalanced and consequently died solely from the sight of the monster. Though most died in the city, Briden was one of the only men who made it back on the ship. Though he got away from Cthulhu, encountering the monster led Briden to laugh uncontrollably and perish from his madness and unstable psychology. In contrast, Johansen ended up as the last survivor from the journey. But from that horrific incident, he knew too much of Cthulhu and became incoherent on the ship. Ever since the events that transpired at sea, Johansen's entire being was crushed and he never was the same again.
