They all work together to get the job done and clean it up. It is all about teamwork. The book has lots of truck noises throughout the words you read, which makes the book come alive.

Authors' background - The author's background has a lot to do with this book and why she wrote it. She has two sons who love to read and one of them loves trucks. They started a bedtime routine and read their books so they would get sleepy. Her youngest kid (who loved trucks_ would always want to read stories about trucks to bed. Instead of getting tired he would get excited and not want to sleep. So he and his mom came up with a goodnight story about trucks that would make him sleepy and that was the first book she wrote. She went on to write many more books about trucks. Which led to the one I just read. I wouldn't say any of the characters relate to her life, but the story behind why she write books about trucks is pretty special. All of her truck books have the same cover picture just a little bit different depending on the title and this is one-way students could see that the same author wrote multiple of these books.

Author - Katherine A. Applegate
Publisher - HarperCollins
Date - January 6, 2015
# of pages - 336
Grade level - 3rd-7th
Genre - Animal Fiction
Summary - I started out with the Dominican Republic flag because that is where Ivan is from and where he was captured. He was then taken to Big Top Mall where he remained for over two decades. Number 3 is his friends at the mall. Stella the old elephant, Bob the stray dog, and Julia who was human. Stella started to get sick due to an infection so they bought a new baby elephant named Ruby. Stella wanted to make sure she was safe and told Ivan to take good care of her if she died. Shortly after Stella died. After her death Ivan was looking over Ruby and realized that the mall is like a prison and he wants out. He ends up in a zoo and slowly starts to fit in and eventually gets a visit from his friends and is happy.
Personal/academic values - I think this book can teach kids about friendship and dreams. It can also teach the kids that some people are in a bad situation and sometimes it's hard to get out, but it is possible and will be worth it in the end. This book has lots of good teaching opportunities.

Olemaun known at school at Christian had it rough at her new school. One of the nuns did not seem to like her and treated her very bad while another one stood up for her. She in an Inuvialuit and she went to the mainland to learn English and go to school. People made fun of her even the nuns. It is so inspiring to hear her story, what she went though and how she made it out.
X-ray - Chose to do the main character Olemaun aka Christian. you can see I have her birth name in the hear and her new name on the outside because at school people did not call her by her birth name. I also have that she is brave and strong willed in the heart because the more you get to know her the more you see these traits. I also have Inuvialuit in the heart because that is where she is from. Some more things I have on the outside are adventurous because she wanted to go on a new journey even though her dad was a little scared for her. I have thick red sock and fatty legs on the outside because people knew her as the girl with the red stockings so they called her Fatty legs. Lastly I have young and smart because many people can see how smart she is and how fast she picked up on English.
Effectiveness - I think this is a great activity for students and really makes them get to know the character on a different level. I think it would be cool for students to pick different characters so they can all share about the different people in the book to have a better understanding of the book and who everyone is.
