Introduction...

In this chapter Ratliff speaks about the stubbornness and importance of a single tone. He speaks about how the series of the same note being played over and over again acknowledges melody, harmony, and rhythm. The single note is not seen as repetition but as temporary interludes. Rather than casting a spell on the audience as music does, the single note does the opposite and brings people out of a spell. “The stubborn note is bossy;...” I believe that Ratliff’s argument on how the single note is a marker and a reminder. You can go from bearl listening to a piece, but when that same note is being played over and over again it snaps you out of trance and allows for the audience to full listen and comprehend the music.

Ratliff uses the song “The Furthest Thing” by Drake as an example. This is an example because it uses his voice to take the audience there. It is not planned but it is considered a stubborn note because the artist is trying to see how long he can keep the audience booed until he loses them
