What do they call it in NYC? Broken windowpane policing? There are a million little behaviors that form the foundation for the larger problems. They have to be quashed, but it's a whack-a-mole game. It threatens to easily overwhelm any actual teaching efforts. And part of the issue is that students don't have enough skin in the game. They don't see how it's in their interest to change their behavior.

I wonder how we can engage even our most challenging learners. Some kids come to school everyday, so they show they want to be here in some way. How do we capture their attention, keep them in class, and engage them in unique learning opportunities? How do we guide them to follow rules and want to be successful? How are our expectations different from theirs and how can we align them to meet in the middle for everyone's benefit?

Start at the very beginning with the very basic skills such as but not limited to...teaching students where the table of contents, index and glossary are located in the textbook. Then teach them how to use them effectively. These basic skills can prove useful. We tend to go above the every day basic skills believing that our students already know basic info or that they possess basic skills. At, times the lack of basic skills is what is causing our students to become frustrated and easily discouraged.

The woman in the video mentioned 80-minute classes. Not only would this allow us more time with the kids who struggle, but it might help alleviate some the issues around chronic tardiness. If the first period of the day were longer (e.g. 80 minutes) then some of the students who constantly come in at 8:00 wouldn't be as far behind as they are now, with a 48 minute class schedule. I also think there should be a rotating schedule to alleviate some of the same issues (being late for/missing the same exact class every day).

I have done that in the past and the extra time is amazing to have in a class because you can dig into a topic and spend time really going through some challenging work because you are not doing it a little at a time. You can do it all at once and really build some momentum

Much of what the Principal was talking about is exactly what we need to instill here at North. We need to make this environment one that the kids WANT to come to. Kids wearing a coat if they are cold should not be a big deal. We need to choose our battles. Let them feel a little bit at home here.

I think we need to be strategic about what we are assessing, make it clear to the kids, and how we are assessing them, but also be consistent across the curriculum and across department... maybe there should be specific goals for assessment

I think we need more social emotional supports--peer social groups, counseling for more students affected by trauma every day, and perhaps an administrator whose role is a behavioral specialist in charge of suspension/rehabilitation--someone who understands where our students come from, is approachable yet encouraging, and who looks like/culturally identifies with many students and/or their family members.
