When discussing the role of plant in our environment, the carbon cycle is one of the first things that comes to mind. The diagram pictured below shows a basic representation of this process. Carbon is first in the atmosphere in the form of Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants where it is moved to animals, soils, fossil fuels and continues through the cycle. This cycle is begun by one critical aspect, plants. This article published by the UCAR Center for Science Education  summarizes the carbon cycle.

There are three different stages involved in this process: the light capturing stage, light dependent (light stage) and light independent (dark stage). I am a very visual learner, and these animations made this process very easy to understand.
