Who are your role models/heros and how do they influence you?
My role models are my mom, dad, and sister. They influence me by their kind words and humble actions. They have shaped me into who I am today which would be a wreck without them. Our family is not the most traditional, but that is what I like about it. My parents have made sure that I could always come talk to them about absolutely anything, even things that many teenagers would never discuss with their parents. My sister has always supported me through everything and is just like a best friend. These people influence me as I watch how they act in situations. I pbserve their actions and try my best too act as they do. My family, my role models, are who I will always look up to.

What are the top five qualities you admore most in others? Why?
I admire kindness, strenth, humility, selflessness, and confidence most in others. Kindness is a given; others should always be treated kindly no matter what even if they do not return it. We never know what others are going through and that one compliment, smile, or gesture could make someone’s day. Strength is very admiring. It’s hard to stay strong and keep our heads held high especially when times are tough, but, with strength, we can help others and help ourselves get over any bumps that may come along the road. Humility is key. Our purpose is to bring others up, not down. Selflessness is a very good quality to have; putting ithers first reflects strongly pn someone’s character. Finally, confidence in yourself and in others is very important to leading a happy life.

Analyze Sonny’s thoughts and feelings about family (Jim, Elsie, and Homer, Sr.). Find two quotes (one from chapters 1 - 5 and a second one from chapters 6 - 8) that support your insights. How might Sonny define the role of family in one’s life? Compose a paragraph response with your quotes smoothly integrated into your writing. Use this as an opportunity to practice your paragraph writing skills.

Family plays a big role in Sonny’s life. He struggles with his relationships with both his brother and father who are quite different than he is. He does, however, really connect tp his mother who supports him though his dream of building rockets. Right in the first chapter, the reader is informed that his father is not really around much and cares more about his work than anything else. Sonny “saw little of [his] father when [he] was growing up. He was always at the mine, or sleeping prior to going to the mine, or resting after getting back” (Hickam, Jr. 8). Sonny’s father never really payed attention to Sonny because he didn’t play football like Jim and was so invested in his work. On the other hand, however, Sonny has a good relationship with his mother, Elsie. She supports his like for science and rockets. She tells him that she “believes [he] can build a rocket. He doesn’t” (Hickam, Jr. 44). His mother has faith even when “he,” his father, doesn’t. Lastly, Sonny’s relationship with Jim is not the best. Sonny was never interested in football like Jim and felt that his father only cares about Jim. Sonny “would tell people some years later that I was raised an only child and so would [his] brother” (Homer, Jr. 18). They would not speak and would often ignore each other. Family is a part of Sonny’s life, but he struggles a lot with his relationships with his father and brother.
