In the case of Mr Casamitjana who was sacked by the League Against Cruel Sports. His case is that the real reason for dismissal was because of his religious and philosophical belief in ethical veganism. A preliminary case was conducted into whether ethical veganism constituted a philosophical or religious belief for the purposes of the Equality Act. The decision that veganism is capable of being a protected characteristic was finalized, this paves the way for many other vegans, and indeed employees with other beliefs, who have been treated badly at work due to pursue claims for unlawful discrimination.

Tom Mcloughlin
religious discrimination

Direct: is when you’re treated differently and worse than someone else for certain reasons. This is called direct discrimination by perception. An example induces:

refusing you a bank loan because you're Jewish

refusing to allow you into a restaurant because you're Muslim

dismissing you from work because you're Rastafarian.

Indirect: A practice, policy or rule can be formal or informal. It can be a one-off decision or a decision to do something in the future. It includes things like arrangements, criteria, conditions, qualifications or provisions. An example includes:

Requiring all your employees to dress in a particular way if this means they can’t wear an item of clothing they regard as part of their faith.

How does the work place reduce discrimination

Everyone in the work place should not be discriminated, so the work place will put measures in to stop or reduce discrimination, these include:
Monitoring emails, internet access, calls, data, CCTV and images if suspicions arise if they are found to have been discriminating then they will either be fired, fined or if serious enough prison time.
Work places have appointed employees as people who you can have confidential conversations about any problems you have this will help people open up about how they feel about discrimination to them making the work place more aware of discrimination.
Awareness of discrimination and the effects it brings; in terms of well being and the law should be given to all the employees in the office so people have more of an understanding of the issue. Training sessions on discrimination has now become increasingly common.
