         <description><![CDATA[<div>there are two main kinds of muscles :<br>Internal intercostal muscles and external intercostal muscles. They are antagonistic pair of muscles.<br><br>When Breathing In: (Inhalation)<br>-Internal intercostal muscles relax<br>- external intercostal muscles contract<br>-Diaphragm contracts pulling downwards<br>-lung volume increases and pressure decreases thus air is pushed into the lungs pulling the ribcage upwards and outwards.<br><br>When Breathing Out: (Exhalation)<br>- External intercostal muscles relax<br>- Internal intercostal muscles contract<br>- Diaphragm moves back to an arc shape<br>- Lung volume decreases and pressure increases air is pushed out of the lungs which pulls the ribcage downwards and inwards<br><br></div>]]></description>

The diaphragm relaxes during expiration creating a convex shape, reducing volume and increasing pressure to allow for air to escape.<br><br>Internal intercostal muscles are relaxed during inspiration to allow for the external intercostal muscles to contract and expand the ribs.<br>Contracted during expiration, to collapse the ribs on the lungs to reduce volume and increase pressure to allow air to escape.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
