In the poem "The Soul" is personified in order to emphasize its ability to make its own decisions. The poem itself is an entire extended metaphor explaining how no matter how tempting, the soul will never give up itself

Simile: Then close the valves of her like stone
--> The poet is comparing the banning of bad people in life to closing valves using "like"

alliteration: "The soul selects her own society" used to make the first line draw the reader in.

Imagery: "gate" "like stone" used to make the poem relate more to the world and show the reader the solidity of the soul. (stone) is solid and unchanging just like her soul.

Parallelism: "Unmoved" it's repeated to emphasize the soul and how it remains still even while an emperor asks to be in.

Connotation: The speaker uses personification to help describe how the soul acts and how it makes the choice for itself.

Slant Rhyme: Lines 1& 3: Society and majority
Lines 9 & 11: Nation and Attention.
