'' The last swimmers have come in from the beach now and are dressing up-stairs; the cars from New York are parked five deep in the drive, and already the halls and salons and verandas are gaudy with primary colors, and hair shorn in strange new ways, and shawls beyond the dreams of Castille.'' (pg 40)

''There was dancing now on the canvas in the garden; old men pushing young girls backward in eternal graceless circles, superior couples holding each other tortuously, fashionably, and keeping in the corners- and a great number of single girls dancing individualistically or relieving the orchestra for a moment of the burden of the banjo or the traps.'' (pg 46)

This quote shows us that the party has dissolved into people arguing and not having as good of a time. In the beginning if felt more fun, exciting and like everyone was having a good time. Later in this quote it shows how the party is now just people arguing with each other. It has broken down.

This quote reveals that a large part of the parties image comes from those attending. Everyone who comes to the party is trying to show off their wealth with expensive and modern things. This connects to the theme of wealth along with illusion vs reality as many of those attending are trying to look wealthy even if they are not.

While at the party Nick observes while not interacting with anyone. This means that Nick is a background guy. This is true because he only follows rich self centered people. He just observes what they do and makes judgement on what they do but does not voice them.

This quote shows that Nick is often in awe of what he's seeing, although he tries to hide it. He uses adjectives like "gaudy" which show a certain distaste for how the people at the party look, but he also seems to admire everything that's happening by describing it as impressive (how many cars there are, the shawls being "beyond the dreams of Castille")

This quote reveals Nicks perspective on the people he is surrounded by. Instead of becoming one with a bunch of chaotic persons, he observes their actions to better understand the kind of character that they have. He's observant and tends to observe life rather than be a part of it. The quote also resembles where Gatsby's party is starting to become more heated, people are loosening up more, have drunk more alcohol, and are starting to show their true colors. This reveals a common theme in this book, which is the self centered characters that appear through it. People put on a glamorous front but when their filter is tampered with they show a true lack of class, gaudiness, and need for attention. They're self absorbed and wish for validation in a high socioeconomic standpoint where they are envied and adored by others. Lastly it relates to the topic ''love and violence'', people have twisted relationships with the people that they meet at the party. There are numerous amounts of affairs and unhappy marriages that can be spotted all throughout the night. People are scorn and rough with one another all while still trying to create an illusion of class. You can't expect to see any honest persons staying true to morally pure ideologies. Love is broken and no longer sweet.
