Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

This stage of Erikson's theory takes place from birth-1 year. In this stage children are looking at their primary caregivers for emotional safety and to create that bond of parent and child. I resolved this stage with mistrust simply because my mom wasn't an affectionate person. My mom is a very firm believer that people shouldn't cry in front of others. "Sensitive, Responsive, consistent caregiving is the key to successful resolution of this conflict".(CHILD pg.165)

The next stage of Erikson's developmental theory takes place from 1-3 years of age. In this stage of life children are taking more of an interest in becoming independent. They are however, struggling with self-doubt and shame if failure to complete a task occurs. In this stage of my life Autonomy definitely was the resolution between the two, I was potty trained very early and could even give myself a bath by the age of 3. "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and By allowing kids to make choices and gain control, parents and caregivers can help children develop a sense of independence". (CHILD pg.156)

Stage 2: Initiative vs. Guilt

The third stage of Erikson's development takes place between the ages of 3-5 years old. This stage in a child's life they are focused on being more powerful and taking commanding roles in scenarios. They struggle with balancing the power of having their own opinion and working with the opinions of others. Kids that experience success at this stage leads to a sense of purpose, if failure is the outcome they often experience disapproval and a sense of guilt. I chose guilt, it's definitely something I struggle with feeling on an every day basis. Due to growing up so independently I am a little bit of a control freak and as hard as I try now sometimes I come off a little too strong. "At the same time, they are learning that some of the things they want to do meet social approval, whereas others do not."(CHILD pg.210)

Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority

Following the third stage of Erikson's theory is the fourth stage, Industry vs. Inferiority, the age range is from 5 to 11 years of age. During this stage of life kids start developing pride in their accomplishments and are recognizing the joys of being rewarded. When children don't experience a sense of pride in something or have something they can say they're good at, often leads to inferior feelings. Encouragement from parents is vital to branching out and trying new things in order to find something they truly excel at. I resolved this issue by choosing Industry, as a kid although I did not have my mothers encouragement at first I later received it after doing well in sports and in school. I've always been a pretty accomplished kid in everything I tried my hand at. "If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self-esteem, they may develop a feeling of low-self worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority".(CHILD pg.276)

Stage 5: Identity vs. Confusion

The fifth stage of Erikson's developmental theory takes place from ages 12-18 years of age. Since this stage takes place in the teen years we can already expect it to be a turbulent time, developing a sense of self is key during this time. Your personal identity shapes our behaviors and what we believe when it comes to certain things. I discovered a lot about myself growing up, I learned things from my parents I hope I don't pass down to my kids. Our day by day interactions/decisions also help shape this "identity" we are trying to find and stay true too. As a kid my family was never big into religion, I was transferred to a private lutheran school where I definitely have started following the path of god. "To become a unique adult with a coherent sense of self and valued role in society".(CHILD pg.336)

Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

Following, now into the sixth stage of Erikson's theory called Intimacy vs. Isolation. The age range during this time is from 19 to 40 years old, which is the current life stage I'm in. This milestone is all about forming those long lasting bonds with other people, a good sense of self will definitely help in these areas. No one wants to endure loneliness and isolation, forming these intimate relationships is vital to the growth of the individual. I chose Intimacy, although I am just getting started with this stage I feel as though I'm capable of acquiring intimate relationships. "Within the context of peer groups, children develop skills needed for sociability and intimacy, and they gain a sense of belonging". (CHILD pg.287)

The seventh stage of Erikson's developmental theory takes place from the ages of 40 to 65. During this stage, it's important to cultivate things that you can "leave behind" as something to show for your life. Doing things that make you feel accomplished, wether that be actually having something to show for it or just the memories. Successful people in this phase often feel as if they're contributing to the world where is on the other hand failure during this stage often leads to feelings of being unwanted and not useful. Since I have not entered this stage all I can say is I hope to grow once reaching this time and have something to show for my development. "Growth and development do not screech to a stop even then".(CHILD pg.357)

The final stage of Eriksons Developmental theory takes place at 65 and continues until death. People often reflect back on their lives during this stage. Success here often leads to feelings of wisdom and content. Although they are at a pretty "developed" age, you always have some growing to do. By this time in my life I hope i've done everything I wanted to do, and learned plenty about life to pass down to my kids. I think at the rate i'm going, I'll have an abundance of wisdom pearls for them. "People continue to shape their development throughout their lifespan".(CHILD pg. 357)
