An example of first impressions in the book is when Elizabeth is introduced to Darcy for the first time at the ball/party. After witnessing his negative and reserved attitude, she concludes that he is full of pride because of his level of status and wealth. In reality, her initial impression of him ended up being wrong because Darcy was actually a good person and did good deeds for others with his money such as paying for Wickhem's wedding. -Sara Breed

An example of women's choices in pride and prejudice is when Mrs. Bennett continually stresses the importance of marrying a man of at least some wealth so her girls don't have to live in poverty and of lower wealth because they can't inherit any money. This shows that women's only choices in this time period were heavily based on practicality and moving up in status rather then for passion or love. -Sara Breed

Women don't get many choices when it comes to moving up in life. In order to increase your wealth you have to marry someone with wealth, which is pretty difficult when most of them have big egos. Like Charlotte marrying Mr. Collins, except Mr. Collins doesn't have an ego. -seth

An example of woman's choices in this book would be Mr. Collins's proposal. Since Mr. Collins knew that he would receive the Bennet's money after Mr. Bennet died, he decided to propose to Elizabeth. He assumed that she would say yes because he has money, but she declined. Mrs. Bennet was mad at Elizabeth because of this. This was abnormal for Elizabeth to decline the proposal because, in this period of time, Women were supposed to marry for money, even if they didn't love the man. -Emily Yenter

The most blatant example of prejudice in the book is Lady Catherine's character as a whole. Everything she does shows that she cares about her status over everything else. When anyone below her in class speaks to her or does something in a way she dislikes they are ridiculed. The best example is when she goes to confront Elizabeth about her and Darcy's alleged marriage. When Elizabeth wont conform to the idea she shouldn't marry Darcy Lady Catherine is livid and goes off on Elizabeth.

In my opinion Prejudice is the most important theme in the novel "pride and Prejudice", because we see this everywhere from Mr Darcy's first impression of Elizabeth to Lady Catherine thinking Elizabeth is just after Mr Darcy's money. This theme is still a big issue in our society today. We always have prejudice against a certain group of people whether we realize this or not. This often comes from our past experiences we made with people similar to them. Our brain works in that way to keep us safe from potential danger. However Prejudice is an issue because it leads people to be mean and disrespectful to one another. We can never truly overcome this because we all are human but we can try to be nice and act accordingly since Prejudice often "hurts" others.

In this time period women hardly had any rights and if they did they were very slim. They could only marry to improve their status and secure their future and men had high standards for their women/wife's. But our protagonist Elizabeth Bennet goes against all norms, instead "always looking her best" she often does not and cares about more important matters at hand for example when Jane Bennet, her sister was sick. Elizabeth walked all the way from her house to Mr Bingley's. She is not a stereotypical women in that period of time which makes her in my opinion a very interesting character.

We see Passion v Practicality all throughout the entire novel of "Pride and Prejudice". A very obvious example is Mrs Bennet and Miss Lucas(later Mrs Collins) marrying for practicality since it was their only way of a secure future, and Jane and Elizabeth trying to marry for Passion. Jane might have married Mr Bingley for a mix of both however she did have strong and true feelings for him, while Elizabeth rejected multiple people even her later husband, Mr Darcy. However it was not "normal" to marry for passion in this period of time.
