The Puritans were group of religious reformers who wanted to transform the way the Church worked. They lived a "pure" lifestyle, having simple clothes, food, and entertainment. They left England for religious freedom and settled in America. They believed that people were predestined to go to either heaven or hell. This caused them to have an "us versus them" mentality.

The witch hunt was a weird time in history where people were being accused of being witches and killed. It was a result of many factors creating a "perfect storm". The Puritans believed in Satan and used him to explain every illness, catastrophe, and instance of bad fortune. They also believed that Satan had witches and wizards working for him and that they could recruit others to become witches and wizards. The previous witch cases in England further strengthened the Puritans belief in witches.

The Witch Trails started when a group of young girls started acting strangely. Betty Paris and her friends became very ill and blamed it on witchcraft. They accused the first three victims in February 1692. Tituba, one of the victims, confessed that there were a group of witches in Salem. This caused mass panic and outrage. This gave people an opportunity to settle personal grudges by accusing others of witchcraft.

Arthur miller is the author of the "Crucible", which is a play about the Salem witch trials. He was inspired to write the play as He was in a kind of witch hunt of his own. In the cold war, people were being accused of being communists and these accusations could ruin lives. Arthur was one of the first to stand up against these accusations, calling them "witch hunts". He wrote to play "Crucible" as a result of the similar nature of the two situations.

Some causes of the Salem Witch trials were teenage boredom, previous cases, old fueds, and personal guilt. As teenagers didn't have much to do back then, they would often be drawn to the stories of witchcraft. This was worried their parents. People like Tibuba told stories myths about witchcraft to kids. Another reason was that the witch hunt gave people an opportunity to settle old feuds- usually about land- by accusing others of witchcraft. Personal guilt also played a factor as people would often blame feelings they were ashamed about on witchcraft.
