I never realized how toxic Sonja and Whitey's relationship is. Quote from page 142= Self determination. SOnja's job was being objectified as a stripper. This became her identity. All of the Native American characters in the novel are searching for identity and self determination.

the definition of cultural appropriation = Curtis Yeltow. Governor of South Dakota. ¨you wouldn´t believe the things that old boy has gotten away with. Smashed into a freight train, drunk, and lived. Used the prairie n*gger word for Indians. Thought it was funny. Had a mistress in Dead Eye. Bought gold and stored it in the basement of the governor´s mansion. And guns? He´s a gun lover/freak. Collects war shields. Indian beadwork. Pays homage to the local savage but tried to store nuclear waste on sacred Lakota earth. Said the Sun Dance was a form of devil worship. Oh, and he´s all tanned up.¨

Much as in Atonement, this is demonstrating a complete lack of divine benevolence over the setting of the story. Despite all of these religious events, there is no blessing, there is no benign deity ensuring the well-being of the tribe. The divinity and religious zeal of old is dead. Additionally, the fact that the tribe is alienated from religion despite their best efforts could be considered analogous to their alienation from the white man and the outside world in general.

The irony!! Our society is and has been corrupt for ages. Religion should be sacred but it can easily be soiled. The Round House should be a safe place for the natives, but Geraldine can never go back without reliving her attack. Nothing in this sinful world can be sacred. Even when people really try to be holy, like the YEC, there will always be people who join with bad intentions, therefore defeating the purpose. People will always take sides, so people will always go against each other and fight. The irony of natives drinking at the Shaking Tent ceremony shows that people of the same tribe can go against each other. No one can be completely selfless.

man vs society- men are against each other, Catholic religion against Native American religion. the white people are trying to put themselves on top, while the Native Americans are trying to fight with them just to be treated equally.
internal conflicts inside of Joe, Geraldine, Bazil,
Joe wants to be a kid but he also wants to be adult. He has childish thoughts and adult thoughts, sometimes both at the same.
Geraldine is obviously going through internal conflict because of the rape. She still has the maternal instincts that she once did, but now they are being pushed back and killed because of the rape. She has had moments where she is happy and acting like a mother to Joe, but for the majority of the novel she is hiding away by herself.
Bazil is battling with himself. In parts of the novel he is still trying to be a father and a husband, but that part of him is battling with the judge who wants to solve the crime and catch the rapist any way possible.
There conflict between Native Americans and white people is also represented in Linda. The white man took a literal part of her body away and used it for himself.

Due to evolution, all people are different even in such small ways as genetics. These differences should be celebrated. The ethnic conflict is at the heart of the conflicts in the novel. There is constantly conflict between Native American and Caucasian individuals. The Caucasian people are constantly defiling sacred places and rituals and the Native Americans are searching for self determination and identity.
Joe is constantly having a battle within himself from being an adult and a child. He tries so hard to act as an adult, but his actions scream adolescence. He drinks the beers and keeps the money. He wants revenge so badly he is willing to ignore the justice system and kill the rapist.

The novel introduces the conflict between the two cultures, natives and whites, by presenting the image of weeds; something awful growing in the foundation of a home. In this scene, Joe starts working with his father but finishes the job alone, which parallels their actions through the course of the novel. The white people planted the seeds in their foundation, aka Linden committing crimes against the natives, but Joe was the one who pulled up the weeds, aka took action against Linden to protect his family. The blame can be cast on Linden for creating a problem, but Joe brought more suffering upon himself by actually pulling apart the foundation. The most depressing part is that leaving the weeds in the foundation would cause as many problems as taking them out.

This theory works to a limited degree. In The Round House, justice was served on both sides with Linden committing violence for being defeated in court while joe also committed violence by killing Linden for his deeds. However, not all actions in the book received an equal reaction such as the killing of Mayla. A similar theme can be found in Atonement, where the punishment for Briony's accusation is her service in the war and permanent regret.

Fisher King = Geraldine -- her spiritual demise has lead to the "infertility" of the household. There is no food being cooked, nothing being grown in the garden. Essentially the death of the family (family being a large part in raising children and otherwise fostering relationships) is the infertility.
Knight/Hero = Joe; He is the one taking the most drastic measures to save Geraldine. He takes it into his own hands to find information. He even rides out on his bike (aka his 'noble steed')
The Journey = Joe Seeking Justice for the Violation of his Mother
The Unhealable Wound = The Murder of Linden. Psychologically, Joe is ruined. His journey to save his mother has pushed him into the dark parts of himself (confronting the black truth). He is in psychological hell, and it takes great will power for him to integrate into society as if nothing every happened.

justice in nature always finds a way to create balance. Until the end of the novel i believed that Joe was the justice sent to take care of Linden, but he failed and Cappy had to get involved. The irony is that justice would have found its way to Linden if Joe had not stepped in since there was a witness who knew where Mayla was. In order to once again restore balance, the universe took Cappy from Joe, maybe to teach him a lesson, or maybe it was saving Cappy from the burden of his crime.

Summer is almost over; normally a novel would end with either spring or summer to signify the healthy and optimistic conclusion of the protagonist's journey into adulthood. Yet the Round House ends with two weeks to go before school starts and autumn arrives. This ironic twist alludes to the lack of conclusion life has; time keeps going, even if the novel stops. This has been hinted at throughout the rest of the novel, with Joe's references to events beyond the scope of the novel. The fact that autumn is coming emphasizes this point.
