On December 7 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor killing 2,403 U.S. personnel, including 68 civilians, and destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships. This brought an end to Americans idea of isolation, having the government realizing that they are not and separated from the rest of the world as they thought. After the attack the U.S. was given much option but to join the war but brings Americans together after the feeling of being attacked.

August 6, 1945 - atomic bomb on Hiroshima
