The main benefit and goal of GMOs is to make our food resistant to different types of weather, insects, and diseases. The problem is that diseases become resistant just like antibiotics make diseases resistant. This can cause diseases to wipe out crops entirely, hurting not only the economy but causing thousands and even millions of people to go hungry. Using GMOs also reduces the need to use harmful herbicides that are toxic to the environment and many other animals. "The scientific consensus is that GMOs are as safe to eat as any other food, that they reduce soil-damaging tillage, reduce carbon emissions, reduce insecticide use, and reduce the use of the most toxic herbicides in favor of far milder ones."
"There's remarkable correlations between the use of GMO and the rates of autism in America."

This quote is used by many anti-GMO activists to disparage voters from voting for GMOs and using it to scare many other uninformed people to take advantage of them so they take their side. "The number of autism cases has skyrocketed in the past few decades. In the 1970s and 1980s, about one out of every 2,000 children had autism. Today, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 150 8-year-olds in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. This expanded definition refers not only to autism but also to a collection of brain development disorders such as Asperger’s syndrome....Now researchers believe they know what’s responsible for the bulk of the rise: Nothing. Much of the rise in autism is likely a statistical mirage." The damage to public health from bogus media claims will only continue to hurt us, not only as a nation, but together across the planet.

It seems as though in the film there were not a significant amount of facts or peer-reviewed data being shown, so it could be easy to get lost in all of the bias and incorrect information. We treat GMOs like toxins to our body, because we let the media and those who are not doing research tell us what to do. While long-term GMO effects are still unknown, there is no data suggesting that GMOs pose any health problems. "Here is a 2016 analysis of about 1,000 studies by the National Academy of Sciences: “The committee concluded that no differences have been found that implicate a higher risk to human health safety from these [Genetically Engineered] foods than from their non-GE counterparts.” The NAS was joined in this judgment by the Royal Society, the French Academy of Sciences, and the American Medical Association."
"Genetic engineering has been a part of our lives for longer than most are aware."

Genetically modified organisms have been around for a very long time. Most of the food that we have today is genetically modified or modified through selective breeding. "Most people in the United States don't realize that they've been eating genetically engineered foods since the mid-1990s. More than 60 percent of all processed foods on U.S. supermarket shelves—including pizza, chips, cookies, ice cream, salad dressing, corn syrup, and baking powder—contain ingredients from engineered soybeans, corn, or canola." (Ackerman) The amount of food that eat that is genetically modified is staggering. The fact that so many regular Americans and people across the world are ignorant to this fact makes it harder for us to protect our staple crops.

Across the world, GMOs have been controversial for decades. The scientists who back GMOs are looked at as henchmen for large corporations making billions off of us eating contaminated food that will eventually kill us. Much of the research behind GMOs being bad for humans today are incredibly biased as well, on both sides. Most Americans today do not believe the scientists who back GMOs today, "only a minority of Americans perceive scientists as having a strong understanding of the health risks and benefits of GM foods."(Funk & Kennedy) Everyone today has their own opinions on genetically modified organisms, and instead of people believing and look at the facts of what is known, many people take the opinions of those who are not qualified or who have never done the research as scientific fact, which hurts us all.
