“My throat dried. My stomach boiled. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I

mean, it was me, but it wasn’t. But . . . it was. I didn’t know how or what to

feel. Like, how could I be that boy—a victim. Me. It was just . . . I don’t know

. . surreal. But we kept watching as the story looped. Sunday, aside from being

a wack TV show day, is also apparently a slow news day. Every few minutes,

the footage of me being crushed under the weight of the cop played, the

newsperson talking about the “string of robberies” and not being able to get a

comment from Jerry’s management or the police department. Then a picture

of me dressed in my ROTC uniform flashed across the screen.” (pg.53)

In this paragraph, Rashad, the main character is being shown on TV for the incident that occurred at the gas station. From this, Rashad feels as if he has been wronged by the media and wants it to stop. This can be connected to much of the outside world with claimed criminals. They feel as if they shouldn’t being getting the incident reported on in the media as they will try to exaggerate the situation. There have also not been any comments from any sides such as Jerry’s management nor the police department making this paragraph seem like a normal news report. Though I have not had this as a personal experience, or studied it at school, I have seen many news reports and videos of people being wronged. In the outside world, people do get falsely accused and have to pay a huge price. For example, since Rashad is being exposed, his name will be over the internet and many things such a getting a job will be highly difficult for him as he is present on the internet as a bad figure.

Connection 2

“Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a problem with a good prayer. I

mean, I believe in God. At least I think I do. I just wondered where God was

when I was being mopped by that cop. And I knew that’s what the pastor had

come to tell me. That God was there. That God was always there. Which, to

me, is the wrong thing to say, because if he or it or whatever was there and

didn’t do nothing, then that would make God my enemy. Because he let it

happen. I would much rather Pastor Johnson say that God wasn’t there.” (pg.51)

In this paragraph, Rashad is questioning himself about religion. In the outside world, many people do that and are unsure whether they believe in a god or not. It isn’t the only thing they question themselves on however. Many people question themselves a lot and want to know better about themselves. This can be anything from whether something can be beneficial for them and they question that to themselves or it can also be the religion. I personally also question myself for little decisions such as what to do and some of these decisions lead to my procrastination. There are definitely	people who can connect with this individually as lots of us do little things to question ourselves.

Connection 3

“I could feel his eyes on me as I carried them up to the kitchen, and I could

still feel the pressure of his fingertips like a ring around my elbow. I made a

point of eating in the living room with the guys watching the game. The game

was a good distraction, a way to pay attention to something else, to try to take

my mind off Paul squinting at me, his gauging me as he’d been talking to me

at the grill.”(pg.63)

In this paragraph, the character, Quinn, was feeling uncomfortable. He felt as if other people were looking at him and he was going crazy. He also felt as if people were touching him and was feeling more paranoid. However he was feeling a bit better knowing that Paul was looking at the game. In the outside world, there are many people who feel paranoid that there might be something touching them. This is known as Haphephobia and although it is an uncommon phobia, many people worldwide have it. Although I don’t experience it, nor did I learn it in school, I still feel like though there was nobody looking at Quinn but they still felt greatly uncomfortable.

Page 65 Paragraph 8

Reasons

Paragraph 1
"My mother and father lowered their heads and closed their eyes. I didn’t do
either. Kept mine open, and my head up, looking at the three of them,
wondering if any of this mattered. I knew it mattered to them, my parents,
and maybe that should’ve been enough for me to participate, but did it matter
to me? I’m not so sure. The prayer was long and dramatic, full of the preachy
punches in between each point. The pastor mentioned how Jesus was
persecuted (heh) and Saul was made blind (heh) and Job was tested (heh) and
David beat Goliath (heh). My mother followed right behind the pastor,
accompanying his rhythmic prayer with hallelujah whispers, and my father’s
manly but, I guess, godly grunts, all eventually—finally—leading to an amen."

Reason

First Paragraph: We think this paragraph stands out because of the author's vivid and detailed description of a prayer. This shows that the protagonist's view on Christianity is somewhat Agonistic, opposingly, his parents are enduring Christ.

Second paragraph
"The kitchen was so silent I could hear my pulse in my ears, pumping red-
hot burning blood into my face. I couldn’t say anything. I couldn’t move. But I wasn’t alone—no one did."

Reason
Second Paragraph: We chose this because it was very descriptive and was also quite impressive how the author described this scenario in such an expressive way. This shows that the protagonist is nervous by the "pulse in my ears, pumping red hot burning blood into my face" (65).

"And I wished the stories stopped there. I really did. But they didn’t. They
went on and on, story after story about not trusting police officers because
they always seemed to act like bullies." (pg 111)
For this, Rashad wants the stories to stop. He doesn't want anymore negativity on him anymore. There are still stories and he does not appreciate it. At this point, Rashad has had so many stories about him that he doesn't trust the police as much anymore. Now Rashad believes the police are the bullies of Rashad.

“Look, man, I’m not trying to say anything bad about Rashad. I’m just
saying that spray painting ‘Rashad is absent again today’ on the concrete in
front of school is like, I don’t know, extreme. He’s not dead.” (pg.97)

The connection here is the peer pressure that occurs. There have been/are many cases of peer pressure all around the world. Here Quinn is told to spray paint in front of the school and try to defame his friend. However being a good friend, Quinn refused the offer and told the person who wanted to peer pressure him that he will not do it. He trusts Rashad and respects him so he won't spray paint and defame him.

"He almost sounded scared, or not
scared, but nervous. It wasn’t Dwyer. It was fear."(pg.95)

An emotion can change how a person normally acts. This happens to lots of people. For example, if a poor person wins the lottery, they are happy which leads them to change how they used to before they won the lottery. They will be now more joyful and will have many tasks that they will want to complete. There can also be a person that was greatly happy before but with the loss of a loved one, their attitude can be changed. They will now be more gloomy and sad as they will mourn their loss.

Paragraph 1
And that’s all I was thinking about as I crammed into a bathroom stall after school—partying, and how I wasn’t wanting to be in that stiff-ass uniform another minute. (1)

This connects to the problems that we experience in real-life. This is because at Southpointe we have to wear uniforms every day which is very unconfrontable most of the time like how the main character of this story explains it. However the character in the book school only has to wear uniforms on Friday but in our case, we have to wear it every day

Paragraph 2
“Don’t be smart,” he’d say, pointing at me with the finger of fury. I never managed to take enough bite out of my tone. And trust me, I knew not to push it too far. I was just so tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. How I experience this connection is in the case of when I am talking about world events and happenings at school with my dad. But, however, like in this explanation he would barrel down my perspectives and he would forcefully provide his

Paragraph 3
“Yeah, he was trying to steal those chips!” the clerk interrupted, shouting over the cop’s shoulder. Then, fixing his scowl back on me, he said, “Isn’t that right? Isn’t that what you were trying to do? Isn’t that what you put in your bag?” Whaaaaa? What was going on? He was accusing me of things that hadn’t even happened! Like, he couldn’t have been talking to me. I wanted to turn around to check and make sure there wasn’t some other kid standing behind me, stuffing chips in his backpack or something, but I knew there wasn’t.
This message connects to problems that I have experience in real-life. How I’ve experienced this connection is in the case of when I was buying something returning something at Costco but someone thought I was stealing the item because I was not holding the return receipt in my hand and because I did not have a Costco shopping cart.

“As a matter of fact, most cops are good. I worked with a lot of great guys,
really trying to make a difference. You need to know that they’re not all
wolves.”(pg.129)

This connection is to console Rashad that it was not completely the police officer’s fault to find Rashad in a bad situation. The situation seems horrible and it was hard for Rashad to overcome the ordeal. However, it was the police officer’s job and he had to perform it thus Rashad was then in trouble.

"If you’re wondering if I had been having nightmares, y’know, about that
day, the answer is, no. I hadn’t been.” (pg.125)

The connection is that people assume many things about each other. In this section, people assumed that Rashad was having nightmares due to his situation which was false. The assumptions of people were wrong and Rashad had shut them down after.

“Thing is, I had been in so many other
situations where things had gotten crazy. A hand goes in a pocket and out
comes a pistol or a blade. And all I could think about was making it home to
you, Spoony, and your mother. It’s a hard job, a really hard job, and you could
never understand that. You could never know what it’s like to kiss your family
good-bye in the morning, knowing you could get a call over your radio that
could end your life.”(pg.128)
The connection here is the life of police officers. They have to endure much mental hardships to perform their duty. Even though they have a family, they put their job first on the line to protect. This was a quote about a time when Rashad’s father had paralyzed a person. This was important to Rashad as he had realized how much his father had cared about him and everyone in his family.
