Gaming is a big part of the culture, and many people see it as a serious hobby or even a job. Esports players train like athletes, with coaches, teams and practice every day. There are also big tournaments, prize money and support from fans. Because so many people play, the competition is strong, so players get better quickly. All of this helps Koreans become some of the best esports players in the world!

While countries outside of Korea may view pro gaming as an extreme hobby pursuit, in Korea it is treated the same as any other profession. Furthermore, the same work ethic is applied for gaming as it is for academics and other professions. Other political and economic factors also come into play, as those who win a medal in the Olympics are exempt from the mandatory military service, which includes the pro gaming category.

From a cultural perspective, Koreans are often very discipline, hard working, and obedient to their coaches which are traits you definitely need when trying to pursue a career in video games. There’s also a lot of good environmental factors such as having a surplus of Internet cafes, high speed internet, and having National support where e-sports are taken seriously and you can even hire coaches to help you get better. The fact that good e-sports players can receive the same amount of support and recognition as regular sports athletes makes it much more appealing to work harder hence why many Koreans decide to pursue video gaming seriously.

The hardworking that Koreans put into games is due to their hardworking nature. They spend a lot of time on education grinding away, so they apply it to their gamers and are able to lock in on it a lot easier. Koreans are also a collectivist society. They do what’s best for the whole team, rather than what they want to do themselves. That makes team comps way stronger than in the west, an individualistic society. In Korea as well, pro gamers are insured for a career path when they retire. As esports is a lot more established here, people can use their reputation as a pro gamer as leverage for their careers later, which makes the job more secure. In the west, people don’t have that kind of insurance as esports isn’t really seen as a real job over there.

Competitive gaming became normalized socially and professionally, with StarCraft and later League of Legends gaining national attention. The government and private sector supported esports, creating structured training environments. Korean culture values discipline and mastery, traits essential for high-level gaming. A large, competitive player base further raises overall skill levels. Urbanization and youth culture also contribute, with many growing up playing games socially.

The reason Koreans are good at games would be because of the competitive environment of Korean society, the potential career of being a gamer, and the availability of PC cafes. From a young age Koreans are raised in a competitive educational environment to get into a top university and have a good working career. Due to the constantness of Korean society, people go to PC bangs to game and destress.

Anna Testorf: Koreans are good at games since it’s a much more structurized system including coaches and social support and acceptance as a professional career. This allows for players to spend time in esports much as an Olympic athlete might train for their sport. As mentioned in the video, other countries see esports as more a hobby sport/career or as a rising sport rather than something that is established

Maeve Pettey

There’s several factors as to why Koreans are good at gaming. One thing they do is work more directly with their coaches- in Korea, coaches dictate what and how they play games, whereas in places like the US, players usually choose what they want to do, which can sometimes lead to the downfall of a team. Koreans also have more opportunities to study esports in college if they want, and I don’t know if there are many opportunities for that elsewhere.

The rise of PC방 created a social hub for young people to play competitively for hours, fostering skill development and a massive talent.

Besides, being a pro gamer is socially acceptable and even prestigious in South Korea, similar to being a professional athlete, just like Faker. This attracts ambitious young players to put more effort into gaming.

Koreans are widely known for being exceptional at games as it is ingrained in their culture. South Korea pioneered professional esports even before most countries recognized gaming as a competitive activity. SK Telecom T1 is one of the most successful esports organizations in the world and Faker, a League of Legends player for T1, is a global esports icon. Furthermore, the country officially recognized esports as a profession, providing resources and support to gamers. This thus encourages the gaming culture in South Korea. The Korea e-Sports Association supports pro players and military deferment are sometimes offered to gamers who bring international glory.
