Growing Contempt

American contempt for their imperial overlords started to grow as tensions between the two groups became strained. The colonists became intolerant of British taxes on imported goods and overall economic regulations (Boston Tea Party protests represented the unequal regulations). Over time, colonial life seemed to grow into a new culture: one of diverse religious traditions, ethnic backgrounds, and social classes. This separation began to breed slow, but steady colonial dislike for the British.

Because of frequent warring both abroad and in Europe, the England was in significant debt. This hard pressed them to look for relatively easy forms of income. Logically, the best place to turn was towards the colonies. The colonies, like anyone else, did not see why they should pick up the tab for England. This was magnified especially because there were no tangible effects of this significant loss of income.

Separation Over Religion

Over time, there was a growing divide between the culture of the England and the colonies. One of the main reasons for emigrating to the colonies was a need for a fresh start. The Anglican Church was the Primary Church in England at the time, founded by Henry the VIII, after disagreements with the Pope. Upon creating this Church, Religious liberties and freedoms were trampled, leading many to emigrate to the colonies in search for religious freedoms unobtainable in England. Many colonies, specifically in the New England region, such as Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc. promoted religious tolerance as one of their core principles. As opposed to England where individuals of other religions found punishment and discrimination

In this period, as the contempt between the two groups had grown astronomically, they began to separate themselves socially, and Englishmen, typically saw themselves as above the Colonists. As far as the colonists, many were born in the New World and have never even visited England, giving them no direct ties to the empire, whatsoever. In cases such as the Boston Massacre, where British troops fired on a group of Colonial protesters, killing 5 civilians, were later acquitted by a British lawyer, inflamed the already vast hatred of the anti-British colonists, who used the event to show the social inequality that the colonists faced.

To expand off of the taxation, even though there were governors of the colonies, there was no real government structure that helped the colonies. To multiply that effect, there was little to no legislation that helped the colonies. In a sense the colonies were able to create their own identities instead of remaining part of the crown.

Another reason that caused dissent between the colonists and the British was how detached and un-involved they were in British foreign affairs. For the most part, colonists lacked all representation for how they were governed in England. In the colonies there was no real structure that a colony was forced to uphold, they were able to essential govern in any way that the felt necessary. As a result, when England would declare war with another European Nation, such as France, the colonists did not want to be involved, and they didn't see it as "their war". As a result of this, when the crown required the soldiers pay taxes and provide men to support the war effort, they were not happy to say the least.
