The History of Depression

Depression first appeared in ancient Mesopotamia writings around the second millennium BC. Early humans believed that depression was a spiritual (or mental) illness and not so much a physical illness. People thought that this illness was cause by being possessed by demons, so they called on priests to "cure" the tormented souls.
Ancient Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, the Chinese, and Egyptians also had this idea in their cultures that depression was the cause of evil spirits. They would "treat" people with beatings and starvation to drive the demons out.
However, Ancient Greeks and Romans were caught between the two ideas of: Whether depression was caused by evil spirits or if depression was actually a biological and physical illness. The people who believed this was biological and physical illness treated people with baths, massage, diets, and medication containing poppy extract and donkey milk.
It is hard to say who first discovered depression or who was the first person diagnosed because humans have been dealing with this disorder since the beginning of humanity.

Some people are allergic to medications and would need to find a different path to recovery. Others might just want the help of friends and family. It's important to know that recovery will not happen right away. These kind of things take time!

Depression is absolutely treatable! Understanding that you are not alone if a key point as well to becoming healthy again. There are other people in the world going through the exact same thing as you!
According the Health Canada, '"the most common and successful treatment is psychological counseling, combined with anti-depressant medication."' And lots of sunshine and exercise!
Just because you have depression, it does not make you lazy.

There are many helpful ways that someone could be helped to overcome depression.
A doctor might give a patient a physical examination. The goal of a physical examination would be to see if a physical cause is leading to depression. A doctor would also check to see if there is any damage to the central nervous system. I thought that the whole world was out to get me and that nobody loved me and that I would never be happy again because of my major concussion. I didn't think I had a problem, which is a huge problem in its self. I was able to pull myself out of a downward spiral with the help of my friends, family, my dog, and medication. In order to get better, you NEED to let in to help you. I cannot stress that enough. Trust me, the world won't end...

~Maddy Keir
