What was your first experience with race? My first experience with race was culture shock. Having grown up in an African American community. I attended preschool elementary and high school with a majority of other kids who looked like me, Black boys and girls .

My first day at CSUN I was approached by a fellow student handsome, blond hair, blue eyes. He walked towards me a said “hello”. He asked me if I ran track? I quickly said no”. I had never been that close or engaged with a white teenage boy. I was Leary and wanted to be with my friends who were also students at CSUN. Today in hind site I really believed he wanted to be friends.

How old were you? I was 18yrs old

What emotions do you associate with the experience? Regret

Have you ever talked about the experience?Yes. I’ve shared that experience I had many times with best friends, nieces and my mom.

How have your early experiences with race shaped your worldview?

Hearing stories of my Dad’s experiences saddened me. At age 14my dad’s family had to expel him from Shreveport , Louisiana, due to aggression with a white man. I am grateful to have had my father in my life. He lectured me on life and expected nothing but self reliance of me.

I felt saddened to know a child had to be pushed away from his family because of a situation caused by a grown man, who was white.

what connections can be made between having a positive sense of self and our experiences with identity and race?

Brainstorm regarding your thoughts on how these concepts are connected. For example, do you think someone who has a negative view of their sense of self can have a positive sense of ethnic identity?

No. If you can’t have self love for yourself you won’t love others.

Would you assume that a person who identifies positively with African American Psychology might have a stronger or weaker sense of self or ethnic identity? Please explain why.

I believe that person would have a stronger sense of self belief or ethnic identity.

I believe in spite of what others think or believe about themselves , their integrity and belief says it all. By seeing the positive in African American Psychology people can demonstrate to act above negativity.

I believe the that it is both yes and no. I say this based on the fact that our African America Churches and Fraternities/ Sororities demonstrate the Spirit of Ubutu by sharing assistance with food, medical and educational assistance .

Compare and contrast in detail and provide examples of any parallels/similarities that you have been able to identify between African cultures and African American culture. Has this concept of Ubuntu changed your worldview at all? Explain. I can identify between African and African American cultures when it comes to our beliefs in God's Word, The Bible. I have attended a church with Africans and African Americans. We study scripture, praise and worship with song. All in the Name of Jesus Christ. No, the concept of Ubuntu has not changed my worldview at all.

Provide an example of how you have witnessed the concept you have chosen.

Spiritness: My definition of Spiritness is to be fearless, and adventurous.

The women of our family are full of zeal, energy and fearlessness. Especially when it comes to times of celebrations. During preparation of my oldest sister's bridal shower all the women of our family showed up and out.

It was beautiful event when all the aunties, female cousins and my mom came to. It made everyone excited for it.

Then, define and provide an example of the concept that you feel is least present in the African American community. Also, provide an example.

The Maafa demonstrates history of the atrocities that were brought upon the African Slave Trade. I believe children are not being exposed or taught about the past of our enslaved ancestors from Africa, because of young parents and young grandparents due to drugs that were bought into the black community during the influx of drugs in the 80's.
