I'm a psych major and I guess what my teacher Harry was talking about from his own experience rings pretty to me. There are questions I've had that Psychology alone can't create a satisfying enough answer to, mainly questions about the world we live in and why it is the way it is. Sociology is a new lens for me to see through and perhaps just like my teacher Harry, it may even be my future major.

]]> 2024-01-17 03:47:28 UTC https://padlet.com/toneguerrerotg/llamaslovelumpias/wish/2851312177 (JCB) Preface and What I Think toneguerrerotg https://padlet.com/toneguerrerotg/llamaslovelumpias/wish/2852512986 One of the books that Harry instructed me to write about in this Padlet is called "Introducing Sociology Using The Stuff of Everyday Life" by Josee Johnston, Kate Cairns, and Shyon Bauman (JCB), the preface of which explains exactly what the authors mean by that title. One part of the preface that got me interested is when they used the analogy of Toy Story and how the movie "allowed us to imagine the secret lives of toys when people left the room" (JCB), they continue by saying that they hope to "encourage you to imagine the secret life of commodities." (JCB). Commodities are a huge part of most people lives, in fact, so much so that whatever you're using to read this post of mine could even be considered a commodity. One thing about commodities that most people tend to undermine or forget to acknowledge is how those commodities came to be in the world as we know it.

The authors of the text state that through every chapter we'll learn about a different "consumer item or phenomenon" and I'm looking forward to learning this stuff. In my eyes this information will help me make informed decisions on what I should be buying and what kind of things in the world are actually necessary and maybe even show me the parts of consumer culture that need to change. What I hope is that the text as well as my sociology class can teach me all the things that make both negative and positive impacts on the world around me and help me navigate through it all.
