Music plays a critical role in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Music is referenced in the book in order to emphasize the emotions of a scene or to represent the thoughts of the characters. Additionally, by utilizing popular music from the era, Fitzgerald was able to have his readers connect to the music he referenced. This cemented The Great Gatsby's place in the Jazz Age.

The most popular version of this song is by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, and it is a waltz. The original version was written by Julian Robledo and Theodora Morse, and the most significant lyrics are "My heart keeps beating in time/
Sounds like an old sweet love tune/
Say that there soon will be a honeymoon". Three O' Clock In The Morning plays in chapter six when Daisy finally goes to one of Gatsby's parties. Daisy attends one of Gatsby's parties in order to continue getting closer to him. As she is stepping into her limousine to leave, Nick could hear the song playing from Gatsby's house. This song is significant because its lyrics about "old sweet love tune" represent the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. They are long-lost lovers, and Gatsby in particular has been working towards winning over Daisy for 6 years. Due to the lyrics and quiet instrumentation, the song gives the book a melancholic mood as it reflects on the relationship between the lovers. Fitzgerald chose this song in particular due to its popularity at the time.

This is a jazz song by Fats Domino, and the most significant lyrics are "Your heart belongs to me/
At night when you're asleep/
Into your tent I'll creep". This song is heard when Nick and Jordan are driving through Central Park in chapter 4. This is right after Jordan finishes recounting the story between Gatsby and Daisy. The lyrics portray a man desperately wanting to be with a woman. It is clear that the woman in the song is not yet with the man since he is trying to convince her that her heart belongs to him. It is very appropriate for Fitzgerald to have included this song after telling Daisy and Gatsby's backstory since this song captures Gatsby's perspective toward Daisy. Gatsby does not have Daisy's love anymore, and he desperately wants it back. Also, the lyric about creeping into a tent is appropriate since later in the book, Gatsby and Daisy rekindle their love in secret. Fats Domino's version of The Sheik of Araby is upbeat, and this lends a bright, energetic mood to the book reflective of the raucous parties thrown by Gatsby. However, the lyrics depicting obsessive give it an underlying dark edge.

This is a foxtrot by Richard A. Whitling. The most significant lyrics are "Ev'ry morning, ev'ry evening/
Ain't we got fun?/
Not much money, Oh, but honey/
Ain't we got fun?". Ain't We Got Fun appears in chapter five when Gatsby is showing Daisy his house for the first time. The two of them end up in Gatsby's music room, and Gatsby commands Klipspringer to play a song. Fitzgerald includes this song here because it represents Gatsby's mindset towards Daisy. The song constantly references simple minded fun, and this reflects Gatsby's simple mindset towards Daisy. He appears to think that his life will be good now that he has Daisy by his side. He seems oblivious to the possibility that it will fall apart. The song is also ironic since it is about a poor couple who are enjoying themselves despite their lack of wealth. Gatsby put in a lot of effort into acquiring wealth for Daisy, but according to the song money is not important in a romantic relationship. Ain't We Got Fun is an uptempo song about enjoyment, so this gives the book a jubilant mood. However, there is an underlying foreboding feeling since the song shows how blinded Gatsby is by his dream.

Produced by Joji, this is an alternative R&B song. The most significant lyrics are " Let me see you/
Let me see you/
I never see you anymore" In this song, Joji laments how he is not able to see his girl anymore. This is very similar to Three O' Clock In The Morning's narrator in that he also misses an old love and he wants to bring it back. You Suck Charlie will convey the same mood as Three O' Clock In The Morning since both of them have quiet, relaxed instrumentals. In exchange of orchestral string instruments, Joji uses piano samples and snaps to convey the same melancholic mood.

By Xxxtentacion, this is an alternative R&B song. The most important lyrics are "Who am I? Someone that's afraid to let go, uh/
You decide, if you're ever gonna, let me know". This correlates to Sheik of Araby since they both portray men who have an obsessive love. In Sheik of Araby, the narrator desperately wants to convince a woman that she is his, and he will resort to any tactic to do so. In SAD!, Xxxtentacion displays another side of obsessive love. He already has the woman by his side, but now he never wants her to leave. This relates to Gatsby since he is deeply in love with Daisy, and his obsessive mindset once he reconnects with Daisy is similar to Xxxtentacion's mindset. SAD! conveys a similar mood to Sheik of Araby since both of them have upbeat, pop instrumentals that juxtapose dark lyrics. As a result, they both have an energetic mood appropriate for a party but with a underlying dark edge. This is symbolic of the parties that Gatsby throws. On the outside, his parties are raucous affairs. However, their underlying purpose is to fulfill Gatsby's obsessive desire of Daisy.

Sung by Sia, this is a pop electronic song. The most notable lyrics are "Baby I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight". This song is similar to Ain't We Got Fun since they are both pop songs bout poor people enjoying themselves despite their lack wealth. In fact, not only does Sia enjoy herself despite her lack of money, by saying that she does not need money, Sia seems like she us happier without money. This is all very ironic for Gatsby because he believes that without money, he will not be able to attract Daisy and be happy. Cheap Thrills and Ain't We Got Fun have a similar mood since they are both upbeat dance tunes. As such, they both contribute to a bright, casual mood.
