Poe mostly wrote tales of mystery and macabre. He lived a depressing life and died mysteriously in a alleyway. For me, this doesn't affect the way I understand and view this story because it can be somewhat related to his own life. Tell - Tale Heart was meant to be a story honoring an old man who died in a murder.
