I think Uncle wants to go back and leave Salva alone to go fight so that he can protect other people from the war and losing their families like he and Salva had.

The group's attitude towards Salva changes because he is no longer family of the leader because Uncle is dead, because they think he will cry and slow them down. I think he will change their attitude towards him by proving that he could handle keeping up with them without complaining. 

Seeing the woman with the orange headscarf helps him to realize that he is never going to see his family again because he keeps getting his hopes up on a dream that is never going  to come true. He keeps himself going at camp by using Uncle's strategy of just giving himself the small goal of surviving one more day each day.
