They constantly made their views known and did things like protest against it, wrote books, and some extremist took far measures. They put in a lot of effort to end slavery because they were relentless and weren't going to let it continue.

There wouldn’t have been as much tension between the north and south if it wasn’t for their different political views on slavery. The north didn’t want slavery anymore and the south wanted to keep things the way they were. The south wanted to keep slavery how it was because they were basically running their economy. Slaves worked at plantations, could be bartered, and could even pay off debts. The north and western states wanted to abolish this.
