When Mexico gained Independence from Spain, it opened up to American traders. William Becknell set out to Santa Fe, New Mexico with hardware, cloth, and china. This created the Santa Fe Trail. Becknell made large profits and word spread of becoming rich in New Mexico. The next spring, Becknell journeyed again to Santa Fe. He had a wagon, but couldn't make it over the mountain, so he had to take a shortcut. Becknell and his men ran out of water and had to drink animals blood. Finding a stream, saved their lives and they made it to Santa Fe. Becknell returned with another large profit.

Mountain men spent must of there summer alone in the wilderness, trapping small animals for their furs. To get the animals furs, they explore the Great plains and far west, and set traps in the icy waters. These adventures that the men went on made Mountain men known for the rugged loners. Most Mountain men weren't as independent as people thought. They were mostly economic figures, who sold the furs to business men for money.

After the Louisiana Purchase, people went West to gain land. They hoped to make more money in the future. Merchants went in hope to earn profit. The motive of people to expand was money, land, markets, jobs, escape, and adventure. The U.S. set out in hope for all of these. This caused the people to act in a certain way to get more. Some people might've acted selfish and really concerned in being rich. This was the economic incentive.
