In terms of vocabulary, the Chronicles aid in understanding Old English vocabulary, revealing words that have either evolved, become obsolete, or persisted into modern English. It help us see how the way English is structured and the rules it follows (grammar and syntax) have changed over time. By looking at how sentences are put together, how verbs are used, and other grammatical details in the Chronicles, linguists can figure out how English has developed and which language rules have changed or been replaced over the years.

The advent of Christianity marked the beginning of written English, superseding the limited use of Futhorc runes. Almost all surviving Old English writings are Christian, with notable exceptions like the Runic poem and the 'erce, erce, erce...' incantation, possibly pre-Christian. Christianization introduced new terminology and fostered creative expression, evident in works like Exodus, the Dream of the Rood, and Sermo Wulfstan ad Anglos. Without Christianity, it's unlikely that Old English poetry would have survived. Christianity spurred the development of written style, notably seen in Ælfric's homilies, providing a purpose for reading and writing in Old English.
