Jaycee, age eleven at the time of her abduction, was walking to her school bus stop when Phillip Garrido tased Jaycee and forced her into his van. Garrido and his wife, Nancy, drove Dugard to their house; where she would remain for the next eighteen years of her life.

Garrido, forty years old at the time, forced eleven-year-old Jaycee to bathe with him. Dugard documents Garrido making her take off her clothing and forcing her to touch his genitals. Approximately one week later, Phillip enters Dugard's prison and molests her for the first time. Jaycee records the immense pain she felt and fighting against Garrido. She reports being unable to move, crying, and bleeding as a result of the assault. This was the first of many frequent rapes, which Dugard refers to as "encounters".

After a while of being cuffed, Garrido began taking the handcuffs off of Jaycee and eventually leaving the cuffs off permanently. Supposedly, the reason Garrido left the handcuffs off is due to the fact that he wanted Dugard to "be more comfortable". Although Garrido was giving Dugard more freedom, she was still locked in the small room. Dugard was brought a small TV for entertainment but otherwise the only things she could do was sleep or listen to sounds outside.

The baby was named Angel, but was referred to as "A" for the duration of the memoir. Phillip named Jaycee's first daughter Angel to symbolize his religious beliefs and "angel theory". Dugard also reports that, for a while after having Angel, Phillip did not abuse drugs or rape Jaycee. Nancy begins pretending that Angel is her daughter rather than Jaycee's; a tendency that worsens throughout the memoir.

Phillip and Nancy pretend to be the parents, with Jaycee, Angel, and Starlet as their children. Jaycee and her "family" begin to go on outings together, beginning with a trip to the beach.

Jaycee, Angel, and Starlet were discovered on August 25th. Nancy ran up to Jaycee and the girls to tell them that Phillip had been arrested. Phillip's parole officer had handcuffed Phillip and then proceeded to take the handcuffs off of him and instruct him to show up to the Concord parole office the next day. The next day, Phillip, Nancy, Jaycee, and the girls go to the parole office. Phillip said he was tired of harassment from the authorities. When they arrived at the parole office, the officers were confused as to why Phillip, a registered sex offender, was there with minors. Jaycee, going by the name Allissa, was released after about twenty minutes of questioning. Nancy and the girls were separated from Jaycee after she revealed that the girls were, in fact, her children and not other family members. Jaycee was brought in for more questioning, and Phillip confesses to the kidnapping. Jaycee, aged twenty-nine, was finally discovered.
