In chapter 5, Twain criticizes the judicial system by implying that they are ineffective and have lots of limitations. In this chapter, Twain writes, "The judge said courts mustn’t interfere and separate families if they could help it; said he’d druther not take a child away from its father." This quote is shows the judge's reluctance to separate father and son, even though it is the right thing to do in this case.

Through Pap's speech in chapter 6, Twain writes about how people in society can be ignorant and unfair. Pap is ignorant because he doesn't listen to anyone else and only believes what he thinks is right. He also hates that his son is smart and educated and believes that he should be better than him. He is very disturbed when he hears that a Black man can vote and seems to believe that it is unfair. "Thinks I, what is the country a-coming to? It was ’lection day, and I was just about to go and vote myself if I warn’t too drunk; but when they told me there was a State in this country where they’d let that nigger vote, I drawed out,"

In chapter 5, Twain tries to criticize the idea of family by showing how not every family is warm and loving, some are harsh and agressive. The father's aggressive and demanding behavior towards the narrator reflects a lack of nurturing and supportive family relationships. “Looky here—mind how you talk to me; I’m a-standing about all I can stand now—so don’t gimme no sass. I’ve been in town two days, and I hain’t heard nothing but about you bein’ rich. I heard about it away down the river, too. That’s why I come. You git me that money to-morrow—I want it.

"Here is the law a-standing ready to take a man's son away from him--a man's own son, which he has had all of the trouble and anxiety and all the expense of raising. Yes just as that man has got that son raised at last and ready to go to work and begin to do suthin' for him and give him a rest, the law up and goes for him" ( page ).What is ironic about this statement made by Pap?

In this passage, it is ironic because Pap is the one who is abusive and neglectful. He is complaining about how they are threatening to take away his son, meanwhile, he isnt acknowledging that he is the reason why they want to take him away. He is making himself seem like a concerned father, meanwhile he is not even considering that what he has done to Huck is wrong.

This quote shows how racism was very common during this time and Pap's racism was the norm. In this quote, Paps is showing his anger that there is a well-educated, well-dressed, free, black man who is able to vote. Pap is very annoyed by this as he believes that he is better since he is white, and since the black man has qualities that were more normal for white men at the time.

What statement is Mark Twain making by having the Black man appear opposite of Pap in this chapter and through the way in which each of these characters is portrayed? Be sure to use a quotation from both characters in your response to support your answer.

Twain shows how two characters, Pap and Jim are very different. He uses them to talk about how society can unfairly judge people based on their race. Pap is representing the racist attitudes that were very common during this time by showing his hatred towards a free black man who is well educated and is able to vote. In the text Pap says, "Why, looky here. There was a free nigger there from Ohio—a mulatter, most as white as a white man." This quote displays Pap using derogatory language and his discriminatory mindset. On the other hand, Jim is representing a sweet, well- mannered man. "He had the whitest shirt on you ever see, too, and the shiniest hat; and there ain’t a man in that town that’s got as fine clothes as what he had; and he had a gold watch and chain, and a silver-headed cane—the awfulest old gray-headed nabob in the State. And what do you think? They said he was a p’fessor in a college, and could talk all kinds of languages, and knowed everything."
