The Pennsylvanian period (also known as the Carboniferous period) took place around 300 million years ago, right after the Permian Era and right before the Mississippian era. What make this era unique and from the others is the new climate and new groundbreaking evolutionary advances that also took place during the time.
Weather was much different than it is today, such as the lack of seasonal difference that we have come to expect from today's weather patterns. The overall temperature and weather was that of more of a humid climate and the overall landscape was of a more tropical nature. Since the overall environment lacked in variety and changes this meant that since the weather was more uniform, many of the plants that existed during the time lacked growth rings.
With changes in climate and water temperatures came new species evolving and old species dying out because their body chemistry can not handle the new environment; such as the armored fish from the Devonian had become extinct, while other fish (much of which closely resemble what we have today) began to flourish. One of the main causes of such drastic shifts in wildlife and fauna can be credited to the much warmer and abundant water supply.
