  • Appropriation: The act of taking something for one’s own use, typically without the owner’s permission and for profit or clout. 
  • Commodification: Benefiting from other cultures without consent for monetary profit by treating them like goods for sale, ie. making money off of someone else’s culture, especially when the source community is a minority group that has been oppressed or exploited.
  • Cultural Appropriation: The unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else's culture without permission by members of another and typically more dominant people. This includes profiting from a culture not of your own or using a different culture because it looks “cool.”

    First, a culture is not your Halloween costume, Coachella outfit, or team/school mascot.
    Second, ask yourself some of these questions:
    • Are you using this to gain social power, because it looks cool, or for clout
    • Does the source group or culture have a history of exploitation, slavery, or genocide? If so, there is already a social power dynamic at play regarding the use of their culture.
    • Are you buying this directly from the community? Does your participation in it benefit the community or a big-name company. (Who is benefitting?)
    • Has the source community invited you to share in this? This could look like you being invited/requested to dress in traditional attire for a friend’s celebration or event.
    • Is this about commodification or making a profit?

  • Join any of our cultural clubs here at Trinity! You don't have to be a part of that community to join and learn about the culture! They're lots of fun (and sometimes even have food).
  • Try your best to engage with people from the actual source community and learn from them. Too often are the stories of POC told by third parties- which diminishes their voices.
  • Understand the cultural meaning and learn about the culture.
  • Support small businesses!!!! Many major companies exploit cultures by benefitting off of their traditions. For example, buy a dreamcatcher from a Native American artist, not from the store. (Some stores however may have a label saying it was handmade, which is fine)
