Always Bake with Passion (Week 3)

Danushvar A/L Maheswaran
A175190
3rd August 2022

Your progress so far

As of week 3, I have tried something out of my thinking which I have always wanted to try that is semolina cake. It's a hereditary recipe that I am going to follow with the guidance of the internet, YouTube videos and recipe books. I am definitely proud of myself for experimenting on pastries that I have never done before in my entire life. The cake I made were so soft and to be honest it actually melts in the mouth. Semolina cake is better eaten by dipping it in tea. Before baking, I took some advise from my mom and read and took some notes that I could acquire from the Internet and from bakers I personally admire. As for my progress so far I have completed the course and the quizzes on UDE.MY and jotted down some notes from the course for my future use or pass it down to the future generations.

Your feelings & thoughts

To be honest, I actually thought it's a difficult to make cakes especially semolina cakes and that I am taking up a challenge that I wouldn't be able to handle. Gratefully, the whole process was so much fun and and I understood the art of baking cakes. As for me, patience is very important in baking a cake where you have to take time off and wait for the dough or for the cake to rest or cool down once baked to be served. For the process of baking the cake, I felt it a tad more difficult where at one point I needed my mom's assistance. Nonetheless, I still managed to successfully yield an appetizing dessert for my family members. The incident that made me happy was watching the reduction of cake slices from the tupperware that showed how much my family loved the semolina cake with the right adjustment of sweetness.

How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I'm pretty sure that the character of decision making is instilled in all the students involved in this Elective Posting. Our decision making had already taken off since the day we had to choose on the course that we are going to look forward into. As for me, I attained this skill when I was deciding on which pastry to bake, contemplating on the recipes to be selected and during the alteration of the recipe for the suitability of my family. I have made several adjustments in the recipe for example the sweetness to comply to my parents' medical conditions.

How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

The process of baking from pre-baking to post-baking is definitely time consuming and those who had baked before will for sure agree to this without any doubt. From the start of 1st week of EP, I have managed my time wisely by baking weekly. Prior to the baking week, I had visited several shops to buy the ingredients and things necessary and as well browse the Internet to compile recipes required for my pastries. I would set a particular day and time to bake and my mom has definitely been a backbone to me by helping me record the video of the whole process.

Your plan for next week (Week 4)

My plan for next week is the most exciting one which is to make brownies where there's not even a single Malaysian who doesn't like brownies. I've been badly waiting for this week as they said "keep the best for the last" after many trial and errors I just wanted my last pastry which is brownies to turn out perfectly. I could assure that this would be the best pastry for my entire EP journey.

Zarif Izzuddin Bin Zyrean
A174717
31/07/2022

2. Your progress so far

Assalammualaikum, da jia hao, eppadi irukinga, to my esteemed supervisor, Prof Madya Dr. Noor Dina Binti Hashim, legendary coordinator and Komanden(the most pro), Dr. Syamsa Rizal Abdullah, and to my dear peers and friends, welcome back to my elective posting project update, for the third week this time! As mentioned in the previous week, I will be exploring on another service that is under F&B, which is room service, which I must admit, is my favourite service among all, as it strikes an almost perfect balance between physical and mental challenges, while also having fun meeting all kinds of people of different ethnicities, backgrounds, and getting to explore the hotel rooms as a whole, and getting to even access the very special rooms such as the suites, and presidential suites etc. I truly enjoyed this service the most, as it is relaxing in its own way, and moving to and fro is free exercise for me, gonna have to burn all the calories gained from the free hotel food…
Anyways, for jobscope, it is very simple and satisfying, and in the name of the service itself, is truly focused on guests’ wants and needs from the coffee house. This starts from receiving requests from guests, mainly from the hotel phone where they would call from their rooms, and very rarely some guests will come down to the coffee house to request, usually because they are just around the floor after swimming etc. Next, we will jot down the orders, and confirm with the guests if they want to pay by cash or charge it to the room, then key in into the system, and the order shall be prepared by the chefs. Then, I will wait for the food to be settled, so in the meantime I will prepare the necessary cutleries according to the order, any condiments, and most importantly the receipt and spare change in case the guests want to pay by cash, or change their minds from room charge to cash payment. After that, once the food and drinks are ready, place everything including the food and cutleries etc onto a trolley, and cover all the food with food covers that are very classy and shiny, to preserve the food and avoid it getting cold so fast. Once done, double check everything to ensure all of the items are accounted for, compare it with the receipt, and then start bringing the trolley to the staff elevator, and go to the floor of the room of the guest that requested for the food. Once reached, knock on the door with greeting according to the time of the day, and mention room service, all this in a calm and polite tone. Once guest reaches the door, usually the food will be passed to the guest one by one, and some don’t mind us entering the room with our shoes on to deliver the food into the room. Once all the food, drinks and cutleries have been successfully passed or delivered safely and all accounted for, for room charge the guest is required to sign on the receipt, while if payment by cash, cash will be given by the guest, and we will always be prepared with change to be given, to make things easier for everyone, smoother, and always safe than sorry. Once change is given, one copy of the receipt will be given to the guest, and the other copy will be kept at the coffeehouse as proof of transaction and payment. After all that is settled, bid the guests farewell and wish them a good meal, and then deliver to any other rooms if any, and then start to head back to the coffeehouse using the same route.
Another job scope in room service is called ‘floor check’, whereby usually a 2-man job, is required to go to each floor containing guest rooms, starting from the highest(13th floor) to the lowest(8th floor), and pick up any used utensils stacked outside the guestrooms, used plates, dirty dishes etc, usually from the room service. This is done on a daily basis, 2-3 sessions a day depending on the number of guests occupancy. This one is abit challenging at times especially when it is only done by 1 person as the amount can be a lot at times, but still manageable.
The final jobscope for room service includes delivering fruit baskets to VIP Accor club members’ rooms, usually before they check in. The fruit baskets will be prepared by the chef, and we deliver it using same route as usual. Before that, I will have to head to the front office to get the master key card in order to access the rooms, as the guests have not arrived yet. The fruit basket will be delivered along with fork and knife placed in red cloth folded nicely, and with a greetings card for each of the guests, and arrange nicely in the room, as a nice welcoming gift. This is where I also bet to see and admire the rooms, as usually these VIPs go for the most luxurious rooms, so I will get to see the room upon entering. So these are the main job scopes for room service, and I really enjoyed it.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

My feelings and thoughts remain the same, and am still learning along the way, and this week I worked a lot of night shifts, and it was very much more tiring, but made me learn even more while building my physical and mental resistance, and in turn more grateful and appreciate the hard work that people put in to work. All in all, I really enjoyed myself doing the room service, and is my favourite so far compared to the others.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Throughout the journey, decision making has been and always, a very crucial skill needed. Decision making of course is not learned merely through this posting only, but throughout my whole life, and this EP has been another phase of learning it more. Throughout all the services I have gone through, decision making is required in every single one of it. I managed to learn to decide when is the best time to clear the tables during the buffet and event times, I learned to manage my time better and wisely, deciding when is the best time to go for rest and taking turns with co-workers. Deciding to go and help any guests in need and tend to their requests, and even having to decide when is the best time to carry out refills during buffets in order to avoid any complains or difficulties for guests while ensuring everything is going smoothly, down to deciding when to carry out the ‘floor checks’ to ensure the floors are tidy, and guests will have good impressions on the hospitality and cleanliness.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Throughout the journey and as mentioned before, time management is a very important that I learned, especially work-basis, while juggling with wanting to spend time at home with family, getting sufficient rest, while also managing to work 8-10 hours a day. Most importantly is preparing and planning ahead, based on my work schedule. The different shifts made me modify and work along my routine. I used the schedule to plan out my days ahead, and on off days, I spend my most time with family as I only get one day off per week. I would utilise my Ipad and draw out a timetable accordingly, so as to ensure I am on the right track of time each day. And at work, time management is crucial too as having to know when to take a rest optimally as rest time allocated is only half an hour, and break for prayers is also 15-20 minutes only, so managing the time along the way was a challenge, but again I refer to my shift, and plan out the best time to rest and pray, and try to be swift as possible. Alhamdulillah, so far no disciplinary problems or any misunderstandings.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For the final week of my EP, my plan is to be full fledged into all the services, and juggle between all three like normal, so it will test all my skills, knowledge that I have managed to obtain during the last 3 weeks, to put it all together to good use, and see how I perform, and end it with a banger.

KNITTING- WEEK 3

1. SANGITHA A/P BALU
    A174949
    6 August 2022

2. As I knit everyday, my knitting flow and skills were advancing tremendously. During the 3rd week of my EP, I have learned about performing circular knits. Performing circular knits was very different from other types of stitches because the knitting is worked in rounds and spiral. I used the magic loop method to knit in round. The Magic Loop technique is a brilliant method which allows you to knit tubes using the circular needles. I had to watch the lessons and practice the steps multiple times because it was very tricky and confusing. During the 3rd week, I also did my own openwork drawings using all the techniques that I have learned in my 2nd week of EP. I constructed my own knitting chart and knitted a fabric based on my chart. Then, My instructor gave a briefing and taught me about the structure and composition of my garment that I'm going to knit next week. I understood how to follow different designs and choose my own designs on my garment next week.

3. A very common beginnner mistake with circular knitting is twisting the stitches when moving to the next row. It was very frustating for me because it took multiple attempts and few days to master the techniques of the circular knits. In order to avoid all those mistakes and confusions, I always have to make sure that I knit in the same direction and hold the yarn and the circular needles in correct position before starting to knit the next row. As for my self-designed fabric, I am very excited that now I am capable of performing all types of stitches, creating my own knitting chart and knitting the fabric independently. I am also thrilled to knit my garment which is a sweater next week.

4. My decision making skills were utilized the most when I decided to create my own fabric. I planned the length of the fabric, type of stitches and all the designs that I would like to knit in my fabric. I took the risk to experiment some of the designs and knitting techniques that I have learned in the past weeks. Before taking the decisions about my fabric, I had to vision how my fabric would look like once the knitting is complete. I constructed the knitting chart and knitted the fabric all by myself.

5. Time is what we want the most, but what we use the worst. Time management is one of the keys that aided me to improve my knitting skills and complete my lessons on time. I scheduled my time to attend the lessons and practice the knitting during my free time. I decided every day what my goals are and how many rows I have to knit to complete my fabric by the end of the week. Couple of minutes of break during the knitting helped me to relieve my hand cramps and refresh before diving back into the knitting process. I have always doubted myself and had the feeling that I will never have enough time to complete my fabric. But proper time management and pre-planning everything helped me to overcome the time anxiety and avoid procrastination.

6. Next week, I am going to start knitting my sweater. I will start the process from the neck to the body to the sleeves then finally the fist stitches.

Happy Feet 3: Dancing Doctor (Week 3)

Divyachandricca A/P S Anbarasu
A175140
7/8/2022

2. For week 3, I joined the other senior students during their classes. I have been able to learn more steps. Practicing with them helped me grasp the steps for the piece faster and remember them better. I am learning as many songs as I can so that I will not be left out during performances. So far, I would say I have made good progress. I have learned 2 songs since last week.

3. Initially, I was nervous and intimidated to join the other students. But, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. They were kind and patient with me. I was also worried if I would be able to learn the songs in such a short amount of time. I pleasantly surprised myself. My teacher believed I could do it but I doubted myself. This is something I should work on. The practices were exhausting but rewarding now that I'll be able to join my friends in some of their performances.

4. My first decision making skill was applied when choosing dance as my EP. As it usually takes months to learn a piece, I needed to make sure I would be able to achieve my objectives within the elective posting period. This skill was also needed when I was learning the pieces. I had to make a decision on which pieces I think I could learn in a short amount of time. Seeing my progress, I can confidently say I made the right decisions as I have finished 2 songs and am on the way to completing the third song.

5. Classes will usually be held 3-4 times a week. I had to allocate time for my own practices at home before my classes. I was also busy with other family matters and had to ensure that my practice and classes do not interfere with this. It takes me about half an hour to reach my dance class on a good day. With the unpredictable KL traffic, I had to plan my journey ahead. I made sure to leave the house on time so that I would not be late for class.

6. For week 4, I will be preparing for performances. I need to pause learning new songs and polish the steps for the songs I have learnt so far. I also need to get my costume and accessories.

Nur Hannah bt. Mohamed Nazren Azle

A174829

7 August 2022

2.

For week 3, I have the opportunity to learn how to introduce families and learn vocabulary related to family in korean.

Mother: 어머니 (eomeoni)

Father: 아버지 (abeoji)

If we are female to called

Older brother: 오빠 (oppa)

Older sister: 언니 (eonni)

If we are male to called

Older brother: 형 (hyeong)

Older sister: 누나 (nuna)

Aside from that, I also learnt how to count in Korean.

Example: one; 하나 (hana)

Next, I learnt about how to ask and respond time & date using Korean numbers. This time it is a bit confusing as Korean people read the number or date of the months using Chinese characters.

If in Korean one is ‘hana’, in Chinese character we use one as 일 ‘il’.

As for my progress so far, I am now able to ask and respond in Korean when being asked about family and regarding time and date. I also got the highest score for every quiz that I have been assigned to. Besides that, I also jotted down some notes from the provided videos so that I can keep practicing on the pronunciation and writing

3.

Throughout learning the Korean language, I am always happy and excited because I love to know more about their mother tongue. However, I could say this week has been a bit tough for me. When learning about time and date in Korean, I find it difficult to write and pronounce. Despite having a hard time, I overcame it by watching Youtube videos and practicing using the materials provided.

4.

I believe that decision making skill is needed in this elective posting. As for me, I accomplished this skill when I was deciding to invest my money on purchasing a Korean book for beginners to make sure I can improve my vocabulary in korean. Aside from that, I started to watch Korean dramas and decided whether to use subtitles or not. As a beginner in learning Korean, I challenge myself for the first 10 minutes of the drama to not use the subtitles.

5.

Now I am on my semester break, managing time is very important and crucial during this elective posting. Since I am taking an online course, I would say my time is quite flexible. I always make sure to complete all the tasks and quizzes given on time, so I can have leisure time to spend by myself.

6.

For next week, I plan to learn some vocabulary about daily life and complete the task given on time.

Week 3 : Mandarin Chinese Class

Kareshma Nair A/P Pathmanathan
A174923
7 August 2022

2. Your progress so far

As for the 3rd week, I learnt about money and expressions used in shopping. I learnt how to ask for price and how to bargain if the price is expensive. The unit of money used in China is ‘kuai’. For example, 100 Yuan is ‘yibai kuai’, 50 Yuan is ‘wushi kuai’ and so on. I also learnt about colours for this week such as white is ‘bai de’, green is ‘lu de’, black is ‘hei de’ and so on. Learning about colours will be definitely helpful in shopping as I can refer the item that I want to buy using the colour. I learnt a few adjectives such as small (xiao), big (da), expensive (gui) and cheap (pianyi) too. Now, I am able to talk about the expressions used in shopping.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I am grateful to choose mandarin as my elective posting as it is not that hard and it is very exciting to learn this language. It is just that I need to practice talking more in this language so that I can get the pronunciation right.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey ?

I have applied decision making skill even from the beginning by choosing mandarin as my elective posting. I felt learning mandarin is necessary as I will be able to communicate with many people and also able to connect on a deeper level with them in future. Besides that, I have used my decision making skill in using cousera as the platform to learn mandarin as it is easily accessible and the learning materials are easy to understand. Decision making skills is also required to answer the quizzes provided in the course. I believe I have made the right decision in learning mandarin for my elective posting as it will be beneficial for me in future.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I have allocated approximately 2 hours daily to complete the all the lessons, task and revision. For revision, I will usually try to communicate with my nephew in Mandarin. He will correct my pronunciation and teach me how to form sentence in Mandarin. There is no any problem with time management throughout my elective posting as I have a lot of free time.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

My plan for next week is to learn to talk about family members, their occupation and age.

1. I am Ang Zi Qi, Matric Number A174612
7 August 2022

2. Your progress so far
This week, I have learnt expressions about family, for example when people ask me about my siblings, I can now answer them in Hangul.
Thus in my case, I can tell people that:
저는 언니가 하나 있어요, 여동생도 하나 있어요. I have one elder sister and also one younger sister.

Also, I have learnt how to count numbers from one to ten.
하나 one, 돌 two, 셋 three, 넷 four, 다섯 five, 여섯 six, 일곱 seven, 여덟 eight, 아홉 night, 열 ten

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel that learning Hangul is getting more and more interesting. Now, with more practice, I can read the syllabus faster and type it out faster. I can also apply what I have learnt in real life, such as when chatting with my Korean friends, or friends who know Hangul as well. It is really cool to know one more language!

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Firstly, I applied my decision making skill when I wanted to finalise the proposal for the elective posting. I was hesitating to apply for an oversea clerkship or learn some new skills locally. But due to time constraint to do detailed survey, at the end of the day, I decided to learn one of my favourite languages which is Hangul as I was going to South Korea for the Asian Medical Students’ Conference. I could say this was one of the best decision I have made as I got really excited throughout the learning process and got higher interest towards Hangul after my trip in Seoul. Even after this Elective Posting, I decide to continue learning Hangul and hope to master this language one day!

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
As I am attending the online course, thus I could freely schedule my classes. It was convenient to attend the course anytime and anywhere. I did not have any issue with the time management as I could manage it well.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
For week 4, I plan to learn about time and date in Hangul. Thus, I will be able to ask or respond about timings in Korean number, which is practically useful in daily life. At the same time, I will do revision to look back what I have learnt in the past three weeks, as the saying goes ‘practices make perfect’.

Your progress so far.

I learned about shopping expressions during the third week. At first, I'm a little taken aback by the 40 new vocabulary words I have to learn this time. I need to know how to inquire for pricing, components, sizes, colours, and bargaining skills in order to build a shopping phrase.

3. Your feelings and thoughts.

I'm happy that by this point, I've learned a lot of Chinese vocabulary. I simply need to review my earlier courses so I won't forget about it.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

When I made a list of my daily responsibilities, I used the decision-making skill. I need to be as effective as I can because I have a lot on my plate during this semester break in order to finish everything by the deadline. I might not be able to complete numerous things at once if I lack the ability to prioritise and determine the importance of each work..

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I've set up a Coursera goal for myself to complete two days a week for this course. Since I have other commitments during the day, the lesson will typically take place at night.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

I want to learn the fourth phase of the course within the upcoming week. It's my last week in this elective posting, so I'm hoping to learn more. I hope that this entire EP trip was valuable and will be helpful to me in the future.

1. Mus’ab Bin Mohd Hasyahril A174993 3/8/2022

2. As I mentioned on my plan on the previous padlet. I want to improve my packaging and storing. So, I have tried different containers on which suit the best for packaging if postage is needed. The green container can fill up up to 20 pieces of cookies. On the other hand, the black container can fill up with 10 cookies. I also add up silica gel inside to maintain the moisture. Hence, can store last longer which up to two weeks.

3. This week was quite fun for me because I never had this before. I need to research and development on my own for my cookies. I believed that this logistic thing can be applied anywhere in general. In today’s world, online business is the new trend which we need to ride on. Online sale is the game changer nowadays.

4. I learnt that in order to make a good decision, I need to have good reference for my key information in making the decision. Every time I faced challenges on my project, I quickly refer to the best information I can get. Learn from who the best in the game. Be curious not ignorance.

5. It is quite hard for me to manage my time because I have house chore that need to be take care of.

6. I want to sell the cookies and get feedback from the customer

The website redemption are used if the customer choose to make a gift redemption, while gift code is used if the customer wants to purchase Shell Select product or fuel using their points.

Feelings & Thought
I am satisfied with my learning progress, as I am able to learn new things without dismissing all the other stuff I have learn.

Skill of decision making
As being a cashier meaning you’re the first to greet the customer and deal with all the transaction, exchanges of product and multiple customer request. This whole process taught me to use my judgment and critical thinking skills, as I need to attend to customer request and solve their problem. I need to know what problem I can solve by myself as a cashier, which problem require management to solve and which I need to reassure, because sometimes there a misunderstanding and there’s not even a problem to begin with.

Divaharan Subramanie
A175138
7 August 2022

Moving on to third week of my photography course, I am more comfortable with the camera settings and applying the rules of third and proper composition to take nice pictures. This week i learned on a few techniques which are using diagonal balance and static balance to achieve the best composition. I also learned on how to use the camera focus mood to obtain image with best subject focus and sub-subject. So far my progress has been really great as i managed to capture plenty of great pictures.

Some of the points to remember from my third week are there are still a lot to learn and practice and to not give up easily. I am glad that even though i struggled at first with the techniques and composition i did not give up and practised more. Also continuous learning through expert photographers are equally important

I am happier that i am achieving what i wanted to achieve a long time ago, that is to be a good photographer.

One best thing that i did was to keep on learning and practicing as well as exploring more with an open eye.

Well, time to reveal the surprise. I am planning to go to Bangkok, Thailand next week as they have best structures and places to take amazing picture
