The goal of this intervention is to use CBPR, and MAPP methods to develop, implement, and evaluate a theory-based approach to promote MVPA among adults 40-59 years of age in low SES neighborhoods in Harris County. The intervention will be grounded in the constructs of the social cognitive theory (SCT). The SCT will help address the behavioral, cognitive, and environmental-level factors that drive MVPA behaviors.

Interventions using CBPR and MAPP, with SCT has not been done in the literature.

Innovation:

CBPR and IM engage youth in the curriculum design process for the Me and You (Peskin et al., 2015) sexual health education curriculum intervention, but does not include parents in the design process. While there is a component on parent engagement through homework assignments with students, there is no advisory group or guaranteed inclusion of parental involvement in the curriculum. This research will seek to include parents of youth in 6th grade in Harris County in the curriculum redesign process of the Me and You intervention curriculum, specifically the parental component, through needs assessments, and a parent advisory board in addition to youth advisory board. This will focus on harnessing environmental change methods of Mobilizing Social Networks, Participatory Problem Solving, and Structural Redesign.
