Missouri Compromise

- The Missouri compromise of 1820 was an event that would decide the future of new states. The Missouri compromise had the implementation of a line at the 30'36 line of latitude from the Mississippi river west towards the border of Spanish territory. Those on the top side of the line would then be considered free states, and those below would be considered slave states.
- This contributed to the civil war by trying to "solve" the problem of there being too many slave/free states then the other. However, this just separates the two even more and whenever another state joined the other side would become upset due to the unbalance.

- This compromise was implemented in order to prevent the country from tearing each other up. The goal of the compromise was to deal with the issue of slavery in the new states we had acquired from Mexico. In this compromise a new law was implemented, the Fugitive Slave Act, which punishes anyone who helps runaway slaves.
- The Fugitive Slave Act had upset the Northerners greatly as this would cause Southerners to come up to the North and search for slaves bringing slavery there as well. As they would also kidnap those walking around minding their business and sell them off.

- Wilmot Proviso proposed an important proposal to congress which would prevent the spread of slavery. However, this proposal would be denied as it was thought that this was not his idea.
- This encouraged others to try and come up with a way to deal with slavery and to strive to get it passed. Obviously the southerners did not like that as they try to keep their slaves and slavery as a whole.

- The John Brown raid was a raid performed by John Brown and his men, they targeted the federal armory at Harpers Ferry with 21 men. The reason for the raid is not known but there are speculations on the reasoning, Brown was tried for murder, slave insurrection, and treason against the state.
- After this event, the tensions were rising even more, especially due to the election nearing it's end. The raid added just more fuel to the fire in which the south and north were starting to split even more.

- Dred Scott tries to sue Irene Emerson for false imprisonment and battery after she gains ownership following the death of John Emerson. He tried due to being bought in missouri a slave state but then moving to two free states, Illinois and Fort Snelling in free territory.
- Due to the ruling and the reasoning, like the laws not subjecting to him in order to justify why he hadn't been freed yet, this pushed the country into the civil war further.

Though he made sure that he would try and make sure that the south would not leave, as he would not accept any solution to their problems that included that.
