My Personal Experience (Prior to EMA117)- Experiencing the Known

To this day I possess a love/hate relationship with drama and dance throughout my schooling years and now university. I have always called myself 'a creative person' but had never questioned this self-proclamation until faced by the concepts of drama and dance. I consider myself someone who does not feel comfortable in drawing attention to or exerting my 'talents' in front of others. In fact, using the word 'talent' in conjunction with myself makes me feel conceited.
Throughout my Primary and High School years, I have had many opportunities to pursue drama and dance and, in some cases, have attempted to follow these art forms. However, I do not possess the confidence that I do with other forms of art to 'perform' physically in front of others. This is something I am only able to do in front of people I feel comfortable around and when I do participate in forms of dance I enjoy doing so recreationally with my friends. However, this is not to say that I do not wish I was able to enjoy drama and dance, as I thoroughly admire those who do. In year 2, I performed as 'Dopey the Dwarf' in the play 'Snow White' for book week and remember feeling paralysed with embarrassment as I stood in front of my peers silently lip-syncing "Heigh-Ho". In my later years of primary school, I participated in a school 'talent quest', dancing with a group of friends our own choreography.
As I reflect on these experiences, I am able to identify within the Ryan & Healy 'Experience in the Arts' table 4.1, that I fall into the category 'Experiencing the Known' (Ryan & Healy, 2008) in which I am able to "Describe aspects of dance & drama that penetrate everyday lives, share prior knowledge, offer personal opinions about dance & drama and display artefacts (or dance and theatre pieces) with which (I am) familiar." (Ryan & Healy, 2008)

My Personal Experience (Prior to EMA117)- Applying Appropriately/ Applying Critically

Ever since I can remember, I have enjoyed singing. Whether it be in front of the mirror or in front of 2000 people at a concert. I begun my singing career in 2013 when I pursued lessons at 'Stormer Music School'. I then began to sing in a number of restaurants, festivals and events which lead me to sing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith. Between the years of 2013 and 2016 I also had my own Facebook page dedicated to my music, in which I would post videos of myself singing covers to songs, clips of my gigs and recordings of original songs. I had recorded one of these original songs at a studio in which backing vocals and musical accompaniment were added to finish the composition.
Through consideration of my prior experience in music I would place myself under the 'Conceptualizing by Naming' and 'Conceptualizing by Theorising' categories of the Ryan & Healy 'Experience in the Arts' table 4.1. My reasoning behind this decision is that, using the Ryan & Healy table, I was able to identify that I am familiar with and use the metalanguage of music, such as 'lyrics, 'tempo', 'composition' etc. I am also able to describe my own application of techniques or skills as I had done during my singing lessons. Further, I have a full 'understanding of how sequences of musical notes (vocally), can produce particular outcomes and how these can be further manipulated for effect', such as the effect of adding 'vibrato' rather than a flat 'tremolo' to lengthen an end note (Ryan & Healy, 2008.

I consider myself to be at the 'Applying appropriately and creatively' level of experience in visual arts. My reasoning behind this can be seen throughout my experience with visual arts. I have always been passionate about visual arts and every spare minute I have is usually spent drawing. I have experimented with many forms of visual art, such as form, space, perspective, texture (as seen in my HSC Visual Arts major work) and often try to challenge my abilities by producing more intricate artworks. In the 'Applying' strand of the Ryan & Healy table of 'Experience in the Arts' 4.1 table, I believe I demonstrate through my art as I continually 'apply new skills in appropriate ways, such as painting and drawing techniques' such as in my work during EMA117. I have also demonstrated that I 'identify the cause and effect of particular materials on different surfaces' within the 'Conceptualising' strand of Ryan & Healy's table, as executed again in my HSC major work as I used wooden blocks and Artline pens to achieve intricate detail. I have also continually tried to 'experiment with new techniques and design elements', 'manipulate materials in an unorthodox way' and 'choose new forms of self-expression' within my work by using expressive line-work and shading, as seen in the pictures below. (Ryan & Healy, 2008).

My Personal Experience (Prior to EMA117)- Conceptualising by Theorising

Having had a relatively limited involvement in Media Arts, I was somewhat unsure of what this art form would encompass. However, since studying EMA117, I was able to both identify the involvement I have had in mixed media and where this would position me on Ryan & Healy's table of 'Experience in the Arts'. Among other creative forms, I am the most passionate about make-up and special effects. This mixed media art form combines painting and drawing as well as forms such as line, shape, form, colour and texture (such as special effects wounds, as seen below) using the human body as a canvas. These practices can be evaluated in the Ryan & Healy table in the conceptualising strand as "identifying how brushstrokes can produce particular outcomes, and how these can be further manipulated for effect" (such as the contrasting black and white lines used in my 'Ice Queen' makeup look above the eyebrow to create an ethereal frost-bitten effect). I also 'identify cause and effect of particular materials and techniques on different people' by tailoring make-up looks to suit the many skin tones, face shapes, skin types and many other factors that are important to consider when doing make-up on others as an art form (Ryan & Healy, 200).

A video which was intended for our 'music' module (in which we were instructed to remake a music video), ended up incorporating elements of both 'drama' and 'media arts'. During the editing process, in which I spent 4 hours adjusting footage and adding sound effects/visual additions, I was not aware that what I was creating was, in fact, a form of 'media arts'. Things such as the sinking toy boat, titanic drawings and the 'wasted meme', as well as footage from the actual titanic movie, are all elements that transform a regular music video into a form of 'media arts'.
