His death day was a tragic day for North Koreans who worshipped him.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Famine</strong><br>The loss of the Soviet Union, economic mismanagement, and catastrophic flooding caused the great famine in North Korea, often referred to as the "Arduous March." Farming field were destroyed and the government stopped providing rations altogether, prioritizing feeding the military over civilians. 3 million North Koreans reportedly died from starvation during the during this time period. <br><em>"Death was all around us. We'd enter the market in the mornings to find women wailing and rocking in their arms children who had died during the night. As we plunged deep into the merchant's stalls, we found the corpses of old men and women, their mouths still agape" (175).&nbsp;<br><br>"'The factories up here may be open, yet no one is working in them, because what's the point?' he said. 'People don't get paid won for the hours they put in. The food distribution centers are empty, so their ration tickets are useless. There's no hope" (39).</em></div>]]></description>
